Neepawa had a great day at the Canada Summer Games on Friday in St. John’s, N.L., with a pair of local athletes winning medals.
In the triple jump, Daxx Turner covered 15.39 metres to edge British Columbia’s Lauchlan Robert Irish (15.21m) and Manitoba’s Ade Adegbosin (14.73m)
“There’s a lot of feelings,” he told Team Manitoba staff. “I’m honoured, grateful, and especially after today, very relieved. I got silver in Niagara (at the 2022 Canada Summer Games) and I was really focused on upgrading my medal colour. And I was in the silver medal position up until the last round and I honestly, some part of me wasn’t entirely sure if I was able to pull it off, just given the conditions, my reaction to the conditions, having competed earlier, but I was able to focus on what I needed to get it all done and put out a big enough one to win.”

Earlier Friday in men’s javelin, Turner made a throw of 59.05 metres for third. Ontario’s Will Torrance (71.01m) and Quebec’s Charles-Édouard Hamon (66.06m) finished ahead of him.
“It’s great,” Turner said. “I was in Niagara in 2022 and I got silver there, and showing up here, believing in myself that I could medal definitely set me on a high note going into the next competition.
“To prove myself a bit as a more of a thrower, I’m very proud of that,” he added.
In women’s high jump, Lara Denbow cleared the bar 1.70 metres to tie Quebec’s Laurie Boisvert for silver: British Columbia’s Isla Skye Stewart won gold with a jump of 1.73m.
“Oh, I’m feeling good,” she said. “I’m happy that I was able to get on the podium.
In golf, Brandon’s Spence Mott finished fifth in men’s play with a four-round score of 304 (74-78-78-74). British Columbia’s Austin Krahn shot 284 (74-73-72-65) to win the event. Krahn’s 65 was the tournament low.
In men’s lacrosse, Brandon’s Vaughn McLeod scored but Manitoba (3-2-0), which also includes Brandon’s Cash Zdan, lost 6-2 in the quarterfinals to British Columbia.
