MQ Apena rushed 17 times for 317 yards and three touchdowns as the Crocus Plainsmen beat the Sturgeon Heights Huskies 43-13 to open the Winnipeg High School Football League season in Winnipeg on Friday.
Quarterback Joe Makori added seven carries for 71 yards, with Easton Durgan carrying the ball five times for 40.
Kayden MacEachern, Ethan Swiscoski and Durgan recorded five tackles each, while Jack MacEvoy and Destin Brown intercepted passes.
The Plainsmen home opener is on Sept. 12 against the Steinbach Sabres, who dropped the visiting Vincent Massey Vikings 29-13.
Charlie Gauthier went 13-for-21 for 158 yards and a touchdown, but threw an interception that the Sabres returned for a score.
Thomas Seitz caught three passes for 42 yards and the touchdown.
Callum Brosseau picked off two passes and added five tackles, with Caleb Edwards making a team-high 11 tackles, including a sack.
The Vikings host the defending champion Dakota Lancers on Thursday.
