• 60 YEARS AGO — A and W nipped Kullbergs 6-5 to win the West End C baseball championship in straight games of the best-of- three final. Wayne Slack unloaded a triple and double while Allan Armit doubled for A and W.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Mike Jones of Brandon shot an 84 to top a field of 45 entries in the annual Western Manitoba junior golf tournament at the Brandon Golf and Country Club. Jones edged Glen Hanlon and Greg Steeves by one stroke. Janice Campbell, the only girl in the field, shot a 106.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Souris Sabres scored 34 second-half points to overcome a 14-point deficit and defeat the McGregor Mustangs 46-34 in season-opening Rural Manitoba High School Football League action. Scott Webber, Gary Pomeroy and Don McLeod each scored two touchdowns for the winners.

• 30 YEARS AGO — The Vincent Massey Vikings announced they would take a leave of absence from the Rural Manitoba Football League for the 1995 campaign.

• 20 YEARS AGO — The Houstons Hitmen have made it six straight. The Hitmen completed a three-game sweep of the O’Kelley’s Sox at Westbran Stadium to capture the MacArthur Senior AA Baseball League championship for the sixth year in a row and eighth title in the past nine seasons.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Boxe Neepawa Combat Sports Club has affiliated with one of the top kickboxing and mixed martial gyms in the world. The Neepawa training centre is now part of the Roufusport Kickboxing Association, which is run by four-time world kickboxing champion Duke Roufus.
