60 YEARS AGO — Northern Auto Parts bumped Legion 11-6 to capture the West End A baseball championship in straight games. Doug Franklin, with relief help from Keith Lukiw, was credited with the win while Reg Bray suffered the loss. Dave Burman and Lukiw both smacked two doubles and a single for NAP.

50 YEARS AGODave Knock and George Panagiotou scored two goals each in leading Wolves to a 7-0 victory over Olympians in Brandon Senior Soccer League play. Art Heide, Gerald Rocan and Bill Clark added singles for the winners. Gordon Benstead gained the shutout.

40 YEARS AGOBev Neufeld’s home run in the bottom of the fifth inning lifted the Souris Motor Inn Blues past Boissevain Motor Inn 2-1 in the deciding game of the Brandon and District Ladies Fastball League A Division championships. Ella Cyr tossed a one-hitter to get credit for the victory.

30 YEARS AGO — BU all-Canadian Keith Vassell helped lead Canada’s national men’s B basketball team to a bronze medal at the World University Games in Japan.

20 YEARS AGODarcy Mawby lit it up with five touchdown tosses for the Souris Sabres on the opening night of the Rural Manitoba Football League season. Mawby completed 10 of 14 passes for 247 yards and five scoring strikes to lead the Sabres to a 38-8 triumph over the Virden Golden Bears in nine-man high school league action.

10 YEARS AGO — Crocus Plains running back Reilly Keele scored a pair of touchdowns as the Plainsmen edged the visiting Vincent Massey Vikings 21-20 in the high school football season opener for both teams.
