• 60 YEARS AGO — Barry Young turned in 11 strikeouts and led Christies to a 9-6 triumph over White Rose in the Colt playdowns. Dwight Solon, the loser, fanned 10. Roy Baker slugged a two-run homer to help Christies.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Pizza Place Clubbers received run-producing singles from Bill Huston and Murray Blight to edge Simplot Blues 2-1 in the opening game of the Brandon Centennial Fastball League best-of- five-final. Clubbers’ Rich Gregoire allowed only two singles.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Hyundia outscored ANAF 18-14 to win the consolation side of the Brandon Merchants Fastball League. Rocky Addison was the winning pitcher and Darcy Brown rapped out three singles as Hyundia won the best-of-five final 3-1.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Brent Baker’s first-half goal lifted the Park Avenue Squash Titans to a 1-0 victory over the German Royals in a Brandon Senior Soccer League men’s game.
• 20 YEARS AGO — A pair of Brandon teams scored top-three finishes at the season-opening University of Winnipeg high school varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Neelin Spartans defeated the Glenlawn Lions 2-1 (25-8, 21- 25, 15-7) in the third-place final behind the six kills and three blocks of Allyson Menzies. The Crocus Plainsmen took silver after a 2-1 (25-14, 24-26, 15-10) loss to the Selkirk Royals.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Forward Micheal Ferland of Brandon, 23, was signed to a two-year deal by the Calgary Flames after laying 40 hits in six playoff games for the Flames last spring.
