60 YEARS AGO — J and G rallied for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to whip Co-op 14-9 and win the city peewee baseball championship in the Brandon Minor Baseball Association. Wes Davidson and Robbie McLean each hit two base hits for the winners while clubmates Randy Brown, James Sukaroff, Pat Falconer, Stewart Matheson and Laurie Lewis all singled.

50 YEARS AGOGrant Thomson booted three goals in leading Spartans to a 6-1 victory over Olympions in Brandon Senior Soccer League play. Bernie Everett added two goals while Dave Bebbington chipped in with a single.

40 YEARS AGO Jamie Korchinski scored off a corner kick midway through the second half to pull Victoria Inn Titans into a 2-2 tie with Minnedosa Centennials in a Brandon Senior Soccer League game. George Panagiotou got the other goal for the Titans. Gord Lane and Glen McNabb had goals for the Centennials.

30 YEARS AGOGuenther Roth scored twice to lead the Park Avenue Squash Titans past host Minnedosa 4-3 in a Brandon Senior Soccer League men’s game. Tyrus Cobb scored all three goals for the Minnedosa squad.

20 YEARS AGODoug Steeves has earned status alongside Olympian Angela Chalmers, former Winnipeg Blue Bomber greats like Joe Poplawski, Leo Lewis and Bud Tinsley, and hockey legends Terry Sawchuk and Bill Mosienko. And in typically humble fashion, he says he is not sure why. Steeves, the Brandonite who helped build all three high school football programs in the city, will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in November.

10 YEARS AGO — Neelin Spartan Justin Mulvaney has been named the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Andy Currie (A) Division defensive player of the week. Mulvaney recorded six tackles, four assists, a pass knockdown and an interception as the Spartans opened their season with an 18-17 victory over the Daniel McIntyre Maroons.
