IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Ray and Rich Bull of Brandon successfully defended their Father-Son golf trophy at the Brandon Golf and Country Club by turning in an 18-hole score of 82. Bob Jones Sr. and Bob Jones Jr. carded an 87 for second place.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Pitcher Rich Gregoire was named the East Division’s most valuable player and MVP in the league playoffs at the Brandon Centennial Fastball League’s wind-up. Don Robins was named most valuable player in the West Division.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Tony Butt scored two goals to lead Victoria Inn Titans to a 4- 1 victory over Thunderbird Sails in a Brandon Senior Soccer League game. Gerry Gordon and Jim Cooper also scored for the winners.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Quarterback David Chalmers’ nine-yard touchdown run on the final play of the game lifted the host Souris Sabres to a 20-20 tie with the Dauphin Clippers in the Rural Manitoba Football League.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The defending champions of the Rural Manitoba Football League gave the Neelin Spartans another lesson in nine-man high school football. The Vikings dumped the Spartans 43-16 but Neelin did pick up a few moral victories along the way, reaching their highest point total yet in their first season in the league in 20 years.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings received a pair of gifts from the National Hockey League. Ivan Provorov was reassigned to the Western Hockey League team by the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers in the morning and Tim McGauley was sent back by the Washington Capitals in the afternoon.
