BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The Wheat Kings (1-0-1) split a pair of games on opening weekend of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season.
In their season opener on Friday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Kevin Knee scored twice and Max Dawson added the winner in a 3-2 victory over the Yellowhead Chiefs.
Urijah Moosetail made 32 saves for Brandon, with Brandonite Sawyer Wallin blocking 41 shots for Yellowhead.
On Sunday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, Brayden Budolowski scored twice and Owen Sigvaldason, Noah Smigelsky, Ryder Gardner, Landyn Garton and Dayson Martin scored for the Parkland Rangers as they built a 7-0 lead and cruised to a 7-1 victory.
Hunter Ethelston had the lone goal for Brandon in the third period.
Cooper Dryden made 16 saves and Moosetail stopped the only shot he faced for Brandon, with Kyle Pelletier blocking 20 shots for Parkland.
The Wheat Kings have their home opener on Wednesday evening at 7:30 when the Yellowhead Chiefs visit J&G Homes Arena. On Saturday, Brandon heads to Teulon-Rockwood Arena to meet the Interlake Lightning and on Sunday afternoon they host the Central Plains Capitals at 2 o’clock.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
The Cougars earned a pair of wins on opening weekend, beating Parkland and Yellowhead.
On Sunday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Eric Berger and Shane Elder both scored twice and Gavin Anderson, Sammy Clark, Cole Lobreau, Kole Beard and Aubrey Cuvelier sniped as they blasted the Chiefs 9-2.
Alec Strachan and Oliver Nickel replied for Yellowhead.
Nate Brown made 41 saves for Southwest, with Landon McGregor blocking 57 shots for Yellowhead.
On Friday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, the ex-Wheat King Lobreau scored twice in his Southwest debut as the Cougars earned a 5-3 victory over Parkland.
Riley Fluker, Shane Elder and Kole Beard had the other goals for Southwest, with Alex Campbell, Dayson Martin and Jordan Height replying for Parkland.
Brady Shields made 19 saves for Southwest, with Carter Sigurdson blocking 24 shots for Parkland.
The Cougars have a midweek game at Morden’s Access Event Centre when they meet the Pembina Valley Hawks on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and then return home to the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex for the weekend, hosting the Hawks on Saturday evening at 7:30, and on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The Chiefs (0-2-0) opened their season with the games against Brandon and Southwest.
The Chiefs visit Brandon’s J&G Homes Arena on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and then have two home games on the weekend, with Central Plains visiting on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Kenora Thistles facing off on Sunday afternoon at 1:30.
PARKLAND RANGERS
The Rangers (1-1-0) met Southwest and Brandon to kick off the new season.
In their only action next weekend, Kenora visits Dauphin’s Credit Union Place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
GIRLS
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The Chiefs (1-0-1) earned three of four possible points in the opening weekend of the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA season.
On Sunday afternoon at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, Kylie Hack made 18 saves and Casey George and Presley Hodson scored as the Chiefs beat the Interlake Lightning 2-0.
Eleanor Sugimoto blocked 19 shots for Interlake.
On Saturday at Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community Rink, Ainslie Zubec of the Central Plains Capitals scored the lone goal of the four-round shootout in a 3-2 victory for the hosts.
Hodson and Emma Pollock had the Yellowhead goals, with Gracie Johnston making 22 saves in regulation and overtime. Central Plains goalie Olivia May made 31 stops and turned aside all four attempts in the shootout.
In their only action next weekend, the Chiefs have their home opener when the Winnipeg Ice visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The Wildcats (1-1-0) split on opening weekend.
On Saturday in Niverville, they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Eastman Selects (1-0-0) .
Payton Smith had the lone goal for Westman, with Indigo Stone making 24 saves for Westman. Addison Tomes turned aside 17 shots for Eastman.
On Sunday, they blanked the Central Plains Capitals 3-0 in Portage la Prairie.
Ivy Perkin sniped twice and Chloe Astle added a single, with Stone stopping 28 shots for the shutout. Bailey Schwartz turned aside 23 for Central Plains.
The Wildcats visit the Winnipeg Avros at Seven Oaks Arena on Friday at 7:15 p.m., and have their home opener on Sunday at 2 o’clock when the Winnipeg Ice skate into Hartney.
