BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The second-place Wheat Kings (4-1-0-0) swept three games last week in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League.

On Sunday at J&G Homes Arena, Crew Elder had a hat trick and an assist, Etienne Visser had two goals and an assist and Easten Turko had a goal and four helpers as the Wheat Kings earned a 12-1 victory over the eighth-place Central Plains Capitals (1-2-0-1).

The other Brandon goal scorers were Ethan Stanley, Brayden Watt, Ashton Shields, Owen Stanley, Reid Nicol and Kevin Knee. Cooper Dryden made 24 saves for Brandon, with Riley Foster and Karsen Dyck blocking 41 shots for Central Plains.

On Saturday at Teulon-Rockwood Arena, Urijah Moosetail made 19 saves, Jaxson Brick scored late in the second period and Easten Turko added an empty netter as they earned a 2-0 victory over the 11th-place Interlake Lightning (0-3-0-0). Seth Schaeffer was terrific in net for Interlake, turning aside 52 shots.

On Wednesday at J&G Homes Arena, Joe Balabanski scored twice and Hudson Champagne, Ethan Stanley and Reid Nicol gave Brandon a 5-0 lead in a 6-1 Brandon victory over the Yellowhead Chiefs. After Brody Bohemier replied for Yellowhead, Kevin Knee completed the scoring.

Urijah Moosetail made 12 saves for Brandon, with Sawyer Wallin blocking 43 shots for Yellowhead.

The Wheat Kings next see action when they visit the Hockey For All Centre for a pair of games against the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and Sunday on 3 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The first-place Cougars (4-0-1-0) earned five points in three games against the third-place Pembina Valley Hawks (3-1-0-1).

On Sunday at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Eric Berger, Cole Lobreau, Aubrey Cuvelier and Coleton Koop scored as Southwest earned a 4-1 victory. Brady Shields made 24 saves for Southwest, with Koen Bleznuk blocking 19 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Saturday at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Eric Berger scored the only goal in the three-round shootout and had two in regulation as the Cougars earned a 6-5 victory. Riley Fluker, Jake Beaty and Kole Beard also scored as Southwest rallied from a 5-3 deficit with six minutes remaining. Nate Brown made 34 saves for Southwest, with Bleznuk blocking 35 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Wednesday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Paxton White scored 3:08 into overtime to give the Hawks a 4-3 victory after they scored twice in the final seven minutes to tie the game. Kole Beard and Jake Beaty gave Southwest a 2-0 lead, with Taylor Lockhart also sniping. Shields made 37 saves for Southwest, with Bleznuk blocking 29 shots for Pembina Valley.

This week, the Cougars visit the Southdale Community Centre to meet the Winnipeg Bruins on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre to meet the Eastman Selects on Sunday at 1 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

After the mid-week loss to Brandon, the seventh-place Chiefs (2-3-0-0) had a pair of victories at the Shoal Lake Communiplex.

On Sunday, Tyson Bridge and Winston Lepp each scored twice and Grady McNish, Carson Espenell, Alec Strachan and Ethan Turchinski added singles in an 8-1 Yellowhead win over the 11th-place Kenora Thistles (0-3-0-0). Sawyer Wallin made 23 saves for Yellowhead, with Tyson Ponton blocking 58 shots for Kenora.

On Friday, Grady McNish scored the only goal of the five-round shootout as the Chiefs beat Central Plains 4-3. McNish, Strachan and Destin Knight scored in regulation for Yellowhead as they roared back from a 3-0 deficit. Landon McGregor made 33 saves for Yellowhead, with Karsen Dyck blocking 36 shots for Central Plains.

This week, the Chiefs play at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre against the Eastman Selects on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place against the Central Plains Capitals on Sunday at 2 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The Rangers (2-1-0-0), who are tied for fifth place, thumped Kenora at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place on Saturday.

Noah Smigelsky and Ryzlie Nepinak both had two goals and an assist, Ryder Gardner and Owen Sigvaldason had a goal and three assists, and Noah Hanneson, Alex Campbell, Brayden Budolowski, Dylan Anderson and Landyn Garton also scored as the Rangers romped to an 11-1 victory.

Eddy Person made 15 saves for Parkland, with Keanu Waasa’aanakwad blocking 36 shots for Kenora.

This week, the Rangers visit Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to meet the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The Chiefs (1-1-1) were shut out in their sole game last week, which came against the Winnipeg Ice (3-0-0-0) in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Saturday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Isla Matthews stopped all 20 shots she faced as the Winnipeg Ice blanked the Chiefs 4-0. Kylie Hack made 16 saves for Yellowhead.

The Chiefs have next weekend off and return to action when the Westman Wildcats visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday, Oct. 18, and the teams play again at Hartney Arena on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The Wildcats (1-2-0-1) dropped their matchups with the Winnipeg Avros (3-1-0) and the Winnipeg Ice.

On Sunday in their home opener at Hartney Arena, Aliyah Teixeira scored her second goal midway through the third period as the Ice earned a 3-2 victory. Kasia Baranyk and Payton Smith had the Westman goals, with Shannon Hees taking the loss in net.

On Friday at the Seven Oaks Arena, Brooke Froese and Cali Lavallee both scored in the shootout as the Avros earned a 2-1 victory. Ivy Perkin gave the Wildcats an early lead and Callie Franklin scored in the shootout for Westman.

Indigo Stone made 32 saves for Westman, with Adriana Almeida turning aside 35 shots for Winnipeg, plus two in the shootout.

The Wildcats have a busy weekend coming up. They visit the Hockey for All Centre to meet the Ice on Friday at 7:15 p.m., Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex to meet the team Interlake Lightning on Saturday at 8 p.m., and Morden’s Access Event Centre to play the Pembina Valley Hawks on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
