IN THE CITY
• FOOTBALL — Crocus Plains hosts Sturgeon Heights JV, 4 p.m.
• VOLLEYBALL — Neelin Spartans at Vincent Massey Vikings, 6 p.m. (JV) and 7:30 p.m. (varsity)
IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Minnedosa Jets booted two last-quarter singles to defeat Elton Elks 8-7 in the Rolling River High School Football league. Elton opened with Murray Headley catching a pass from Don Blair. Blair converted for the extra point. Gordon English got the Jets’ touchdown while Bob Richardson kicked both singles.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Murray Blight of Brandon was elected vice president of the Manitoba Softball Association at its annual meeting in Winnipeg.
• 40 YEARS AGO — The Vincent Massey Vikings took less than 55 minutes to dispose of the host Spartans 15-6, 15-10, and 15-7 in the opening match of the 1985 Brandon High School Volleyball league season. Much of the Viking power was supplied by veteran starters Lynn Zemliak and Lorna Braaksma, but returning Grade 11 players Paula Gabor and Lisa Mazur sparked the team by crashing balls over and off Neelin blocks on a regular basis.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Brad Edwards defeated Brent Strachan of Hamiota 11-3 in the final of Deloraine’s Men’s Harvest Bonspiel.
• 20 YEARS AGO — After facing 60 shots, you would think that Tyler Plante’s work might be done for the night. Think again. Plante was forced to come up with two more stops in the first shootout of his career and Codey Burki responded with the game-winner to give the Brandon Wheat Kings a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers in a wild Western Hockey League clash at the Keystone Centre.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Darryl Ferland had four kills, four digs and three aces to lead the host Vincent Massey Vikings to a 4-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-11, 25-16) win over the Neelin Spartans in a Westman High School Volleyball League freshmen boys’ match.
