Matthew Siebenga scored a team-high 11 points as Team Canada beat Suriname 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15) to finish fifth at the NORCECA Final Six men’s volleyball championship in Puerto Rico on Sunday.
Ethan Baraniuk recorded eight kills for Canada, which was represented by the Brandon University men’s team and finished 1-4 in round-robin play to miss the semifinals.
The United States swept Puerto Rico in the final.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Brynn Wildeboer put up nine kills and five errors while Nerissa Dyer recorded six and three in a 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22) loss to the Université du Québec à Montréal on Saturday.
Carly Thomson recorded five kills, five blocks, 27 assists and five digs for Brandon.
Brandon opens the Canada West volleyball regular season on Friday at UBC. Their home opener is Oct. 31 against Mount Royal.
Stats from other matches were not available.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The BU men’s basketball team travelled to Newfoundland on the weekend, opening with a 79-78 loss to Memorial on Thursday. Munroop Gill led Brandon with 26 points while Malik Brown dropped 18 off the bench.
On Friday, Gill scored 30 points on 12-for-13 shooting, with Arjun Hehar adding 27 points on 8-for-9 shooting in an 86-83 Bobcat victory.
The Bobcats have one home pre-season game against Algoma University on Thursday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Bobcat women flew to Halifax and lost their opener 76-52 to the Dalhousie Tigers as Macaya Copeland posted a team-high 15 points and four steals.
Brandon won Friday’s rematch 96-66. The box score was not available.
On Saturday, Piper Ingalls notched 20 points and Ella Averill added 16 in a 72-67 triumph over St. Mary’s University.
The basketball regular season opens on Oct. 24 as the Bobcat women and men host the University of Manitoba Bisons. They visit the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Oct. 26.
