BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The second-place Wheat Kings (5-2-0-0) split a pair of road games against the first-place Winnipeg Wild (5-0-0-1) at the Hockey For All Centre in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Sunday, Easten Turko had the lone goal for Brandon as they fell 4-1 to Winnipeg, who had a pair of empty netters.

Urijah Moosetail made 39 saves for Brandon, with Chase Kettles turning aside 23 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Reid Nicol had a hat trick for Brandon, and after Jack Ross tied the game for Winnipeg with a minute left, Hudson Champagne scored the only goal in the three-round shootout for a 4-3 Wheat Kings victory.

Urijah Moosetail made 34 saves in regulation and three in the shootout for Brandon, with Ardan Downey blocking 31 shots for Winnipeg.

The Wheat Kings next see action on Thursday and Friday when the Norman Northstars visit J&G Homes Arena. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The third-place Cougars (4-2-1-0) dropped a pair of games against the sixth-place Winnipeg Bruins (3-0-0-0) and the eighth-place Eastman Selects (3-2-0-0).

On Sunday at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre, Kole Beard opened the scoring and Eric Berger closed it but the Selects had four goals in the middle for a 4-2 win.

Brady Shields made 35 saves for Southwest, with Carter Warren blocking 29 shots for Eastman.

On Saturday at the Southdale Community Centre, Owen Murray and Trevor Toyne both scored twice as the Bruins routed the Cougars 9-1. Jaxsten Hansen-Young had the lone goal for Southwest.

Nate Brown made 43 saves for Southwest, with Zak Matheson blocking 25 shots for Winnipeg.

The Cougars host Norman — who are playing for games in four nights — at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The ninth-place Chiefs (3-4-0-0) split a pair of games against the 10th-place Central Plains Capitals (2-3-1-1) and Eastman.

On Sunday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Brody Bohemier scored 1:28 into overtime to lift the Chiefs to a 4-3 victory over the Central Plains.

Grady McNish had two goals for Yellowhead and Wyatt Njegovan added single as the Chiefs took a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Sawyer Wallin made 28 saves for Yellowhead, with Karsen Dyck blocking 33 shots for Central Plains.

On Saturday at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre, defenceman Crosby Mateychuk had a hat trick as Eastman earned a 7-1 win.

Wyatt Njegovan had the lone Chiefs goal.

Landon McGregor made 39 saves for Yellowhead, with Zaiden McDonald Horvath blocking 17 shots for Eastman.

Next up, the Chiefs host the Interlake Lightning at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The fifth-place Rangers (4-1-0-0) earned a pair of lopsided wins against the 13th-place Norman Northstars (0-7-0-0) at Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

On Sunday, Noah Smigelsky had three goals and two assists and Alex Campbell and Dawson Martin each had two goals and four assists as the Rangers earned a 13-2 victory.

Dylan Anderson also sniped twice and Brayden Budolowski, Ryder Gardner, Ryzlie Nepinak and Bodhi Bloomer added singles.

Eddy Person made 21 saves for Parkland, with Westyn Hlady blocking 57 of the 70 shots he faced for Norman.

On Saturday, Kolby Cooper opened the scoring for Norman but Noah Hanneson tied it 44 seconds later and it was all Parkland from there in an 8-1 victory.

Landyn Garton scored twice, and Parks Gardner, Martin, Gardner, Campbell and Smigelsky added singles.

Carter Sigurdson made 21 saves for Parkland, with Parker Clements blocking 56 shots for Norman.

The Rangers visit the Hockey For All Centre to meet the Wild on Saturday at 6 p.m., and visit Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre to play the Eastman Selects on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GIRLS

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The fifth-place Wildcats (2-3-0-2) had a busy weekend, with three games in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Sunday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Madison Froese made 40 saves plus two in the shootout as the sixth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (2-3-0-0) earned a 4-3 victory.

Ivy Fry scored twice and Lucy Waldner also had a marker for the Wildcats, who received 18 saves from Shannon Hees. She also made one stop in the shootout.

On Saturday at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, Hees posted a 13-save shutout and Ivy Fry, Kasia Baranyk, Charlie Shearer, Ivy Perkin and Payton Smith scored as they earned a 5-0 victory over the eighth-place Interlake Lightning (1-6-0-0).

Eleanor Sugimoto stopped 36 shots for Interlake.

On Friday at the Hockey for All Centre, the Winnipeg Ice (6-0-0-1) went up 3-0 with three goals in five minutes in the second period, and although Payton Smith scored on the power play in the third period, the Wildcats fell 4-1.

Indigo Stone made 27 saves for Westman, with Winnipeg’s Gina Plett turning aside 31 shots.

The Wildcats next see action against their Westman rivals, the Yellowhead Chiefs, when they visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and the teams play again at Hartney Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The seventh-place Chiefs (1-1-0-1) had the week off. They return to action against the Wildcats on Saturday and Sunday.
