BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The second-place Wheat Kings (7-2-0-0) swept the 13th-place Norman Northstars (0-11-0-0) in dominant fashion at J&G Homes Arena in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Friday, Reid Nicol had two goals and two assists as the Wheat Kings laid a 15-2 thumping on the visitors.

Easten Turko also had two goals, with singles coming from Benjamin Sveistrup, Matthew Dupuis, Ethan Stanley, Crew Elder, Joe Balabanski, Hunter Ethelston, Theran Turner, Hudson Champagne, Kale Jones, Grady Taylor and Kevin Knee.

Urijah Moosetail made 17 saves for Brandon, which dressed only 16 skaters, with Parker Clements and Westyn Hlady blocking 42 shots for Norman.

On Thursday, Nicol had five goals and two assists and Ethelston had a pair of goals as the Wheat Kings won 12-1. Dupuis, Ethan Stanley, Hudson Champagne, Easten Turko and Joe Balabanski added singles.

Cooper Dryden made nine saves for Brandon, with Parker Clements and Westyn Hlady blocking 52 shots for Norman.

The Wheat Kings visit Seven Oaks Community Centre to play the Winnipeg Thrashers on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place to skate against the Central Plains Capitals on Sunday afternoon at 2.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The third-place Cougars (6-2-1-1) also had a chance to meet Norman, who played four games in four days, with the final two at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex.

On Sunday, Jake Beaty, Eric Berger and Spencer Cullen gave the visitors a 3-0 lead in a five-minute span in the first period and Cole Lobreau added a goal in the middle frame for a 4-1 Southwest victory. Brady Shields made 15 saves for Southwest, with Westyn Hlady blocking 31 shots for Norman.

On Saturday, Berger had a hat trick and Lobreau, Beaty and Coleton Koop added singles in a 6-2 victory. Nate Brown made 21 saves for Southwest, with Parker Clements blocking 31 shots for Norman.

The Cougars visit Stride Place to skate against Central Plains on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and play the Pembina Valley Hawks at Morden’s Access Event Centre on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The sixth-place Chiefs (5-4-0-0) met the 12th-place Interlake Lightning (0-8-0-0) at the Shoal Lake Communiplex for a weekend doubleheader.

On Sunday, Isaac McArthur, Bryce Gambler, Wyatt Njegovan, Carter White and Grady McNish all sniped as the Chiefs earned a 5-1 victory.Sawyer Wallin made 33 saves for Yellowhead, with Grayson Mcdonald blocking 35 shots for Interlake.

On Saturday, Destin Knight scored twice and Oliver Nickel, Carter White, Alec Strachan and McNish added singles in a 6-4 Southwest victory. Landon McGregor made 35 saves for Yellowhead, with Seth Schaeffer blocking 19 shots for Interlake.

The Chiefs head up to Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to meet Norman on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday afternoon at 1:30.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The fifth-place Rangers (5-1-1-0) earned three points against the first-place Winnipeg Wild (7-0-0-1) and the ninth-place Eastman Selects (3-3-0-0).

On Sunday at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre, Brayden Budolowski, Noah Smigelsky and Dayson Martin put the Rangers up three goals and then they hung on for a 3-2 victory over Eastman. Carter Sigurdson made 51 saves for Parkland, with Carter Warren blocking 26 shots for Eastman.

On Saturday at the Hockey For All Centre, Jack Ross scored late in overtime for a 3-2 Wild victory. Landyn Garton and Dayson Martin scored for Parkland, which led twice in the game.

Carter Sigurdson made 33 saves for Parkland, with Chase Kettles blocking 27 shots for Winnipeg.

The Rangers have a Winnipeg triple-header on the weekend, meeting the Bruins at Southdale Community Centre on Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and finishing up at the Seven Oaks Community Centre against the Thrashers on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The sixth-place Chiefs (2-2-0-1) and the fourth-place Wildcats (3-4-0-2) squared off in a pair of hard-fought games in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Sunday at Hartney Arena, Chiefs forward Rose Cochrane scored the lone goal late in the second period and Gracie Johnston earned the shutout in a 1-0 Yellowhead victory.

Indigo Stone allowed just the one goal for Westman. Shots on goal weren’t immediately available.

On Saturday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Indigo Stone made 26 saves and Chloe Astle and Ivy Fry scored in a 2-0 Westman victory. Kylie Hack made 25 saves for Yellowhead.

In their only action next week, the Chiefs host the Winnipeg Ice on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The Wildcats, meanwhile, host the Ice on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
