Kenn Kreutzer isn’t the youngest guy at the Brandon Fitness Combat Academy, but he might be the one who’s gained the most.

The 42-year-old boxer from Oak Lake, who is matching up against Sandeep Singh at the academy’s Fall Brawl boxing event on Saturday, said his upcoming fight has him awfully motivated.

“It’s been pretty good,” Kreutzer said. “I look back now at where I physically was four years ago and even two years really, and I do notice. If I’m not trying for a fight, I find I don’t put in as much effort. When you have something to work towards, for me anyway, I put in a little more effort.”

He tries to train six days a week.

Kreutzer doesn’t know much about his opponent, although he adds with a laugh “he’s quite a bit younger than me.”

The facility is playing host to the 12-fight card on Oct. 25 at 5 p.m., with seven local boxers expected to compete, and other athletes coming from Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and the United States.

When Kreutzer was younger, he played some hockey and basketball. But his son unknowingly got him hooked on boxing.

“My son wanted to try it so he came for a few months and I just thought I might as well join him,” Kreutzer said. “I was coming here anyway. Here we are.”

He began training in October 2021, and pretty soon he was hooked.

“It’s awesome,” Kreutzer said. “There are good people here. It’s good to be in good shape. It’s different than anything else. Once you start getting in shape and meeting new people, it’s just a great thing to do.”

The actual fight just seems to be the cherry on top for him.

Kreutzer will be fighting at 195 pounds. He has previously had one exhibition match and one amateur bout, which he lost by decision.

“It’s definitely a learning curve,” Kreutzer said. “The first time I went in, I was mentally prepared but it’s your first one so you have the first-fight jitters. I think this one will be quite a bit better just knowing what to expect.

“It’s like anything. Once you go in there, you’re trying to keep your composure. You’re pretty amped up, and I found for myself that once the bell rings and you’re in there, it goes pretty quick, honestly.”

And whether it’s win, lose or draw, Kreutzer knows he’s trying something special.

“It’s pretty satisfying,” Kreutzer said. “Even though I lost the first one, a lot of people wouldn’t even get in the ring.”
