60 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Krugers drew first blood in a home-and-home exhibition football series by defeating the 1964 Manitoba Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s rural champion Rivers Rams 9-6. The Krugers, who played with only 17 players, reinforced their lineup with former Kruger standouts Larrie Pilling, Danny Old, Jan Thorsteinson and Ed Black.

50 YEARS AGOGordon Boles and Mic Burke of the Wheat City Sports Car Club cleaned up at the Sports Car Olympics held in Regina. Boles was the overall winner of the Olympics and champion of the Class B title. Burke topped Class A entries and had the fastest time of the day when he covered the slalom course in 47.5 seconds.

40 YEARS AGO — Six unbeaten Jenkins Carpet Curlettes rinks headed to the Wheat City Curling Club for regular league play and only one survived. Heather Lewis needed one in the 10th end to edge Jean Garbolinsky 8-7, then went to the 10th against Donna Lawson before scoring one again for another 8-7 win.

30 YEARS AGO Julie Halls had 13 kills and Jennifer Connors 10 blocks to lead Vincent Massey to a 3- 1 triumph over visiting Crocus Plains in a Brandon High School Volleyball League varsity girls’ match.

20 YEARS AGO — A 28-point outing by Adam Hartman lifted the Brandon Bobcats to an 86-79 victory Sunday over the Georgian College Grizzlies and into second-place in a men’s university basketball tournament in Thunder Bay, Ont.

10 YEARS AGO — In Waywayseecappo, Bradley Schoonbaert of Brandon had a goal for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Steinbach Pistons, as did former Brandon Wheat Kings forward Quintin Lisoway of Neepawa in 1 5-1 victory. Cartwright’s Ty Enns scored for the Wolverines.
