• 60 YEARS AGO — The Virden Golden Bears rambled to a 39-14 victory over the Melita Marauders in a Southwest High School Football League semi-final. Bob Lane, Lloyd Carruthers, Bernard Chrisp, Brian Milner, Bruce Fowler and Blaine Fowler accounted for the Virden majors.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Brandon Olympics made their first-ever hockey game a win- ning effort by dropping the Brandon Bobcats 4-3. Ray Brownlee, Brian Hodgson, Roy McLachlan and Andy Murray scored for the senior-A club in the exhibition game, while Bob Young had a pair for the Bobcats.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Rick Lindquist’s third goal of the game in the second over- time period capped a come-from-behind 10-9 victory for the Brandon Bobcats over the Alberta Golden Bears in a Canada West university hockey game.

• 30 YEARS AGO — James Lenton potted a pair of goals to lead the Crocus Plainsmen to a 7-4 victory over the Birtle Falcons in one exhibition high school hockey game. Scott Major, Jay Hrominchuk, Kevin Schepp, David Newman and Jeff Dietrich also scored for Crocus.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Luke Hewitt won’t be around for the reunion with his old team tonight. The 20-year-old Brandon Wheat Kings enforcer left the WHL club on his own accord. While the Wheat Kings boarded the bus to begin a five-game tour of the U.S. Division beginning tonight against Hewitt’s former club, the Tri-City Americans, the left-winger headed home to Fort St. James, B.C., to get a job.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Trent Miner shut the door for the Brandon Wheat Kings as they defeated the Winnipeg Hawks 2-0 in Winnipeg AAA Bantam Hockey League Division 1 play.
