BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The third-place Wheat Kings (8-2-0-1) earned three points in a pair of road games against the first-place Winnipeg Thrashers (9-0-0-0) and the ninth-place Central Plains Capitals (3-6-1-2) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Sunday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, the Capitals tied the game with a power-play goal by Tryp Klassen with 32 seconds remaining in regulation after Owen Stanley sniped for the Wheat Kings on the man advantage six minutes earlier.

The game ended up in a four-round shootout, with Hudson Champagne and Jaxson Brick scoring for the Wheat Kings.

Urijah Moosetail made 28 saves for Brandon, with Karsen Dyck blocking 33 shots for Central Plains.

On Saturday at Seven Oaks Community Centre, Julian Fedora scored the only goal in the three-round shootout to lift the Thrashers to a 3-2 victory. Crew Elder and Grady Taylor had the goals for the Wheat Kings.

Cooper Dryden made 31 saves for Brandon, with Nolan Giles blocking 29 shots for Winnipeg.

In their only action next week, the Wheat Kings host the Interlake Lightning at J&G Homes Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The fourth-place Cougars (7-2-1-1-) earned three points against Central Plains and the fifth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (7-3-0-1).

On Sunday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Carson Hiebert had the only goal in the three-round shootout as the Hawks earned a 5-4 victory.

Aubrey Cuvelier, Kole Beard and Riley Fluker gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead, but it took a late goal by Southwest’s Spencer Cullen to send the game to overtime.

Brady Shields made 38 saves for Southwest, with Koen Bleznuk blocking 29 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Saturday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Ethan Breakey scored early in the second period to put the Capitals up 1-0, but it was all Cougars from there in a 5-1 Southwest win.

Liam Magwood, Riley Fluker Jaxsten Hansen-Young, Coleton Koop and Cole Forbes had the goals for the Cougars. Nate Brown made 32 saves for Southwest, with Riley Brown blocking 31 shots for Central Plains.

The Cougars visit the Parkland Rangers on Friday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place at 7:30 p.m., and host Central Plains at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Saturday at 8 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The eighth-place Chiefs (5-5-0-0) split with the 12th-place Norman Northstars (1-11-0-0) at Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

On Sunday, Brody Bohemier, Wyatt Njegovan and Redden Richmond sniped as the Chiefs earned a 3-1 victory.

Sawyer Wallin made 30 saves for Yellowhead, with Westyn Hlady blocking 40 shots for Norman.

On Saturday, the Northstars roared back with two goals in the last five minutes to gut out a 5-4 victory.

Winston Lepp, Alec Strachan, Nolan Kozak and Destin Knight scored for the Chiefs.

Landon McGregor made 20 saves for Yellowhead, with Parker Clements blocking 35 shots for Norman.

The Chiefs stay out on the road on the weekend, visiting the Hockey For All Centre to meet the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and heading to Teulon-Rockwood Arena to meet the Interlake Lightning on Sunday at 1 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The sixth-place Rangers (5-1-3-0) had a Winnipeg double-header, meeting the seventh-place Bruins (5-0-1-0) on Saturday and the Thrashers on Sunday.

On Sunday at the Seven Oaks Community Centre, Julian Fedora scored 75 seconds into overtime in a 3-2 Winnipeg win.

Owen Sigvaldason and Forrest Karlson had put the Rangers up 2-0 in the first period. Eddy Person made 32 saves for Parkland, with Tate Barnaby blocking 21 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday at the Southdale Community Centre, Noah Smigelsky opened the scoring for the Rangers and Dayson Martin tied the game in the third period, but Ryland Moore scored late in overtime for a 3-2 Bruins win.

Carter Sigurdson made 36 saves for Parkland, with Zak Matheson blocking 18 shots for Winnipeg.

The Rangers also had a game scheduled against the Bruins on Friday but it was postponed.

Parkland has a three-game home stand coming up at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, hosting Southwest on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Eastman Selects on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The seventh-place Chiefs (2-3-0-1) fell 3-0 to the first-place Winnipeg Ice (8-0-0-1) in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Saturday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, Gina Plett made 21 saves and Kate Cairns scored the winner just over three minutes into the opening frame.

Gracie Johnston made 25 saves for Yellowhead.

The Chiefs meet the Wildcats at Hartney Arena on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and then don’t see league action again until the weekend of Nov. 14.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The fourth-place Wildcats (3-5-0-2) were also blanked 3-0 by the Ice on Friday at Hartney Arena.

Isla Matthews made 29 saves for the shutout, with Shannon Hees stopping 25 shots for Westman.

Callie Adams scored the winner early in the first period, and Sophie Woznesensky added a pair in the victory.

The Wildcats host the Chiefs at Hartney Arena on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and then don’t see league action again until Nov. 15.
