Trevor Winter wanted to bring senior men’s basketball back to Brandon, so he made it happen. This fall, he saw a gap at the grassroots level, so he’s doing his best to fill it.
Winter’s Brandon Bucks are partnering with the Westman Youth Basketball Association to run a Grade 5-7 boys’ league, which begins tonight at New Era School.
“You look at what Winnipeg has to offer, they have Peg City, they’ve got Winnipeg Minor Basketball (Association), they’ve got so many leagues, and Brandon just doesn’t really have one,” Winter said.

“My kid loves basketball and there’s nowhere to play in Brandon.”
Four teams, the Raptors, Lakers, Celtics, and Bulls, will play games at 6 and 7 p.m., each Wednesday before a year-end tournament at Crocus Plains on Dec. 14.
Winter is certainly grateful for the help of WYBA executive director Juan Mosquera.
“He’s got the name, he’s got all the contacts, so I worked with him to get it going, and here we are,” Winter said.
He enlisted the help of plenty of experienced coaches, some of whom also have sons in the age group, to make the league happen.
Adam Philpott and Adam Hartman are a few, while Mosquera, Kobe Shakotko, and more will help the league operate.
The coaches held a “draft” to form four fairly even teams last week and considered a mix of practices and games but ultimately decided it was best to play as much as possible.
“We do a lot of skill sessions but not a whole lot of games, so it’s good to try and tie it all in,” Winter said.

“(Our focus is) just playing basketball and competing, making new friends, and just learning the game. Having refs and actually learning, if say, for instance, the whistle blows, you (got to) know where to go.”
Registration was $160 per player. Winter is hoping to make the league grow in the future. Those interested in supporting and sponsoring can email him at trwinter@icloud.com.
