BOYS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The Wheat Kings (11-5-0-1), who are in a five-way tie for third place with the Southwest Cougars, Parkland Rangers, Pembina Valley Hawks and Winnipeg Bruins, were swept by the Bruins (11-1-1-0) at Southdale Community Centre in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Saturday, Kale Jones and Easten Turko gave Brandon a 2-1 lead in the second period, but the Bruins scored four of the next five goals for a 5-3 victory. Max Dawson had the other Brandon goal.

Cooper Dryden made 36 saves for Brandon, with Logan German turning aside just 17 shots for Winnipeg.

On Friday, the Bruins went up 2-0 through 40 minutes, and while Grady Taylor and Reid Nicol scored, the Thrashers earned a 4-2 decision.

Urijah Moosetail made 28 saves for Brandon, with Zak Matheson blocking 16 shots for Winnipeg.

The Wheat Kings visit the Kenora Thistles at Moncrief Construction Sports Centre on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The Cougars (10-5-1-2) visited the second-place Winnipeg Thrashers (15-0-0-1) and the seventh-place Eastman Selects (11-5-0-0) after hosting Yellowhead earlier in the week.

On Sunday at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre, the Selects built a 3-0 lead before Jamie Williamson and Cole Lobreau scored for the Cougars, but Eastman emerged with a 3-2 victory.

Nate Brown made 36 saves for Southwest, with Zaiden McDonald Horvath blocking 26 shots for Eastman.

On Saturday at Seven Oaks Community Centre, Kole Beard had the lone Cougars goal as they fell 4-1 to the Thrashers, who scored a late empty netter.

Brady Shields made 37 saves for Southwest, with Tate Barnaby blocking 31 shots for Winnipeg.

On Wednesday at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Alec Strachan gave Yellowhead a 1-0 lead, Southwest’s Taylor Lockhart tied it up, Wyatt Njegovan sniped again for the Chiefs, but it was all Cougars after that in a 4-2 victory.

Lockhart tied the game late in the second period and Eric Berger and Cole Lobreau sniped in the third period for the hosts.

Nate Brown made 16 saves for Southwest, with Landon McGregor blocking 38 shots for Yellowhead.

The Cougars visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex to meet the Chiefs on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and host the Central Plains Capitals in Souris the next day at 2 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

After visiting Southwest, the ninth-place Chiefs (9-9-0-0) hosted the 10th-place Central Plains Capitals (3-10-1-2) and the 12th-place Norman Northstars (1-19-0-1) at Shoal Lake Communiplex

On Sunday, Gavin Noseworthy scored his first two goals of the season as the Northstars built a 2-0 lead before Alec Strachan and Ethan Turchinski replied for the Chiefs.

In a six-round shootout, Brody Bohemier and Winston Lepp scored as the Chiefs earned a 3-2 victory.

Landon McGregor made 39 saves for Yellowhead plus five in the shootout, with Westyn Hlady blocking 30 shots for Norman, plus four in the shootout.

On Saturday, Wyatt Njegovan, Grady McNish and scored in the second period and Alec Strachan added a buzzer beater as the Chiefs beat the Capitals 4-2.

Sawyer Wallin made 51 saves and Landon McGregor added five more for Yellowhead, with Riley Foster turning aside 45 shots for Central Plains.

The only action for the Chiefs this week is their matchup with Southwest on Saturday.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The Rangers (10-4-3-0) swept Norman in a pair of games at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.

On Saturday, Brayden Budolowski, Ryzlie Nepinak, Ben Poole, Bodhi Bloomer, Miguel Van Den Driessche, Forrest Karlson and Dayson Martin scored as the Rangers built a 6-0 lead and won 7-1.

Carter Sigurdson made 21 saves for Parkland, with Parker Clements blocking 38 shots for Norman.

On Friday, Alex Campbell scored twice and Noah Hanneson, Brayden Budolowski, Gavyn Yon, Dayson Martin, Parks Gardner and Ryzlie Nepinak added singles as the Rangers earned an 8-5 victory.

Eddy Person made 17 saves for Parkland, with Clements and Westyn Hlady combined to stop 36 shots for Norman.

The Rangers have just one game next week, hosting the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The sixth-place Chiefs (4-4-1-1) had a busy weekend, meeting the eighth-place Interlake Lightning (1-11-0-0), the fifth-place Central Plains Capitals (5-7-0-0) and the second-place Eastman Selects (9-1-0-1) in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Sunday at Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Centre Rink, the Selects built a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes and Addison Tomes stopped 20 shots as they earned a 3-0 victory over the Chiefs.

Gracie Johnston and Kylie Hack made 35 saves for Yellowhead.

On Saturday at Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community, Presley Hodson sniped twice and Haley Chipelski, Courtney Cochrane and Devyn Moncur added singles in a 5-2 Yellowhead victory over the Capitals.

Gracie Johnston made 31 saves for Yellowhead, with Olivia May of Central Plains blocking 23 shots.

On Friday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, Jordan Woloski scored twice and Hodson, Chloe Facey, Emma Pollock and Haley Chipelski added singles as the Chiefs earned a 6-2 victory over Lightning.

Kylie Hack made 13 saves for Yellowhead, with Eleanor Sugimoto and Joslyn Tetlock combining to block 33 shots for Interlake.

The Chiefs hit the road on the weekend, visiting Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex to play Interlake on Friday at 8 p.m., and Morden’s Access Event Centre to compete with the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The third-place Wildcats (5-5-0-2) hosted Interlake in their only action of the week.

On Saturday at Hartney Arena, Ivy Perkin scored twice and Callie Franklin and Jaedyn Hoemsen also sniped as the Wildcats earned a 4-1 victory over the Lightning.

Shannon Hees made 19 saves for Westman, with Joslyn Tetlock turning aside 30 shots for Interlake.

The Wildcats are on the road on the weekend, visiting Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community to play Central Plains on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and heading to the Seven Oaks Arena to skate against the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
