On Saturday at J&G Homes Arena, 13-year-old callup forward Kale Nicol scored on a goal assisted by his older brother Reid in his U18 debut as the Wheat Kings beat the Capitals 7-0.

Hudson Champagne scored twice and Crew Elder, Reid Nicol, Max Dawson and Hunter Ethelston also sniped. Cooper Dryden made 22 saves for the shutout, with Riley Foster blocking 39 shots for Central Plains.

The Wheat Kings have four games next week. They host the Winnipeg Thrashers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., visit Dauphin’s Credit Union Place to meet the Parkland Rangers on Friday at 7:30 p.m., host the Southwest Cougars on Saturday at 8 p.m., and then they meet again at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Sunday at 2 p.m.

They don’t return from the Christmas break until Friday, Jan. 2 when the Winnipeg Bruins visit.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The fifth-place Cougars (17-7-1-2) travelled to the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre for a weekend set against the 13th-place Kenora Thistles (1-24-0-1).

On Sunday, Shane Elder had a hat trick, Jack Polasek scored twice and had four assists and the Cougars received singles from Taylor Lockhart, Jamie Williamson, Cole Forbes and Kole Beard as they earned a wild 9-5 victory. Southwest led 4-0 after 20 minutes before surrendering three goals in a four-minute stretch late in the middle frame.

Brady Shields made 22 saves for Southwest, with Tyson Ponton and Keanu Waasa’aanakwad blocking 44 shots for Kenora.

On Saturday, Elder scored twice and Riley Fluker, Gavin Anderson, Eric Berger and Jake Beaty added singles in a 6-0 Southwest victory.

Nate Brown made 26 saves for the shutout, with Waasa’aanakwad blocking 41 shots for Kenora.

The Cougars finish up the first half with their home-and-home series against Brandon. They return from the break on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4 when they host the Eastman Selects.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The ninth-place Chiefs (13-15-0-0) had a busy week, hitting the road on Wednesday to meet Central Plains and then hosting the 12th-place Norman Northstars (2-27-0-1) and the first-place Winnipeg Wild (23-3-1-2) at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on the weekend.

On Sunday, Yellowhead’s Nolan Kozak tied it 1-1 in the first period but a goal by Wild forward Anthony Bedard three minutes later stood as the winner and the Wild added an empty netter at the final buzzer in a 3-1 Winnipeg victory

Landon McGregor made 36 saves for Yellowhead, with Chase Kettles blocking 26 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Nolan Kozak, Grady McNish and Ethan Turchinski all scored twice and Isaac McArthur sniped once in a 7-2 Chiefs win over the Northstars.

Landon McGregor made 34 saves for Yellowhead, with Parker Clements and Westyn Hlady combining to turn aside 38 shots for Norman.

On Wednesday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Alec Strachan’s hat trick wasn’t enough for the Chiefs to overcome a 4-1 deficit as the Capitals earned a 7-6 victory.

Oliver Nickel, Winston Lepp and Nolan Kozak also scored for Yellowhead.

Tristan Klatt and Carter Walker made 27 saves for Yellowhead, with Karsen Dyck blocking 24 shots for Central Plains.

The Chiefs finish up the first half with a tough stretch on the road. They meet the Winnipeg Bruins at Southdale Community Centre on Friday at 7 p.m., visit the Winnipeg Wild at Hockey For All Centre on Sunday at 4:30 p.m., and then head to Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre to play the Eastman Selects on Sunday at 1 p.m.

They return from the break on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Sunday Jan. 4 when the Winnipeg Thrashers visit Shoal Lake Communiplex for a weekend doubleheader.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The eighth-place Rangers (13-8-4-0) met the Winnipeg Wild and Central Plains last week.

On Sunday at Stride Place, Alex Campbell scored twice and Dayson Martin, Noah Smigelsky, Owen Sigvaldason, Landyn Garton, Ryzlie Nepinak and Noah Hanneson also sniped in an 8-3 Parkland victory.

Carter Sigurdson earned the victory, with Karsen Dyck in net for Central Plains. The final shots on net were not accurate.

On Saturday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, Dayson Martin gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the first period but the Wild struck twice in the middle frame. Martin then tied the game with 73 seconds remaining to send it to overtime, where Parkland successfully killed a penalty.

Noah Smigelsky scored the only goal in the three-round shootout as Parkland earned a 3-2 victory.

Carter Sigurdson made 30 saves for Parkland — including four in overtime, and then three more in the shootout — with Ardan Downey blocking 14 shots for Winnipeg.

The Rangers complete the first half of the schedule when they host Brandon on Friday, and then travel to Kenora’s Moncrief Construction Sports Centre for games against the Thistles on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

They return from the break on Jan. 2 and 3 for a pair of home games against Central Plains.

The fourth-place Chiefs (7-6-1-1) had the week off in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

They return to action at the Shoal Lake Communiplex when they host the Avros on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and Central Plains on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The Chiefs return to the ice on Jan. 3 when they journey to Winnipeg’s Seven Oaks Arena to meet the Avros. They then head to the Hockey For All Centre the next day to play the Ice to complete their all-Winnipeg weekend.
