• 60 YEARS AGO — Bill Robinson was named winner of the H. L. Krug Crawford Memorial Award as The Sun’s Sportsman of the Year for western Manitoba in 1965. At 20 years of age, this outstanding gymnast is one of the youngest athletes to win the award. Runners-up were Rich Wozney, Bill Fairbairn, Jim MacDonald and Peter Isaak.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Brandon Wheat Kings’ left-winger Dale McMullin, the team’s leading scorer with 31 goals, and centre Danny Bonar, runner-up to McMullin in points with 59, were two of seven players named to the Eastern Division all-star team.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Alec MacGranachan scored with 20 seconds remaining to lift the Elkhorn Canadians in to an 8-7 victory over Virden Oil Kings in a SouthWest Hockey league game. Rodney Frederick scored twice for the Canadians.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Dale Isfeld scored a goal and set up two others to pace the Neepawa Natives to a 5-4 Manitoba Junior Hockey League triumph over the St. James Canadians. Brett Hagberg, Dan Sims, Ryan Anderson and Darren Kirk also found the back of the net for the Natives.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Bobcats men’s basketball team scored all five starters in double figures and earned an 87-72 victory over the Calgary Dinos in Canada West university action.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Kale Clague was one of 12 Western Hockey League players named to play in the CHL’s top prospects game on Jan. 28 in Vancouver. The 17-year-old Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman, a product of Lloydminster, Alta., will play for Don Cherry in the annual showcase of the Canadian Hockey League’s top draft-eligible players.
