• 60 YEARS AGO — Beryl Simpson of Riverview scored a 7-5 victory over Midge Horn of Lenore to win the women’s curling zone playdowns in Virden.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Brandon University Bobcats beat the South Division all-stars from the SouthWest Hockey League 9-5. Jeff Sheardown scored three goals for BU, while Wayne Naka and John Goran both scored twice.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Forwards Byron Lomow and Derek Laxdal of the Brandon Wheat Kings were selected to the Eastern Division all-star team announced today by the Western Hockey League.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Richard Dane and Neil Kilborn both scored twice to spark the Vincent Massey Vikings to a 7-2 triumph over the Rolling River Rage in Westman High School Hockey League action. Shane Twerdun, Trevor McGill and Shane Maguire also scored for the Vikings.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Erin Mahoney’s run at the Manitoba junior women’s curling championship ended with a resounding thud. The Wheat City rink lost the semifinal 9-0 in six ends to Kaitlyn Lawes of Pembina, eliminating Mahoney from the 16-rink competition at the St. Vital Curling Club.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Reid Duke had six points and Ivan Provorov scored a pair of goals and added three assists in his return to the Brandon Wheat Kings as they beat the Prince Albert Raiders 8-1 at Westman Place.
