IN LOCAL HISTORY

• 60 YEARS AGO — Virden’s Dunc Elliott and his sharpshooting curling team of Jack Templeton, Ralph Willams and Terry Yushchyshyn, waltzed undefeated through the Oak Lake open bonspiel.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Bill Clisby and Donna Hean won the city five-pin bowling championships. Clisby averaged 262 a game for 24 games and finished at the top of the 16-man competition with a total of 6,308. Hean had a 24-game average of 261 and finished the 14- woman tournament with a series of 6,285.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Kevin Hedley’s third goal of the game with one second remaining pulled Weyburn Warriors into a tie with Shoal Lake Eagles and Doug Hedley’s goal in overtime gave the Warriors a 5-4 NorthCentral Hockey League victory.

• 30 YEARS AGO — The first full-time coach of the Brandon University Bobcats, Gary Howard, was announced as being among five inductees to the new men’s basketball Hall of Fame along with former player Mike Vaira and three others. Howard coached from 1968 to 1974.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Kory Kimpinski scored two goals as the Brandon Wheat Kings dumped the Central Plains Capitals 8-2 in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League

• 10 YEARS AGO — Carmen Ross’s 29 points paced the Virden Golden Bears to a 67-29 win over the Kelvin Clippers in the third-place game at the Kildonan East varsity girls’ basketball tournament.
