BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The second-place Wheat Kings (29-6-0-2) swept a three-game home stand, beating the third-place Winnipeg Thrashers (28-8-2-0), the seventh-place Pembina Valley Hawks (21-14-1-1) and the fourth-place Winnipeg Wild (28-5-1-2) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League this week at J&G Homes Arena.

On Sunday, Hudson Champagne’s second goal of the game stood as the winner as Brandon edged Winnipeg 3-2.

Reid Nicol had the other goal for the Wheat Kings. Urijah Moosetail made 22 saves for Brandon, with Chase Kettles blocking 34 shots for Winnipeg.

On Friday, Jaxson Brick, Grady Taylor and Nash Lenton scored to give Brandon a 3-0 lead and they cruised to a 5-1 victory over Pembina Valley. Owen Stanley and Cole Dupuis also scored for the Wheat Kings, with Urijah Moosetail making 22 saves.

Brody Peters and Koen Bleznuk combined to make 39 saves for Pembina Valley.

On Tuesday, Cooper Dryden stopped all 33 shots he faced, Easten Turko scored twice and Champagne had a goal and two assists as the Wheat Kings blanked the Thrashers 4-0.

Cole Dupuis had the other Brandon goal, with Tate Barnaby and Nolan Giles combining to stop 30 shots for Winnipeg.

A busy four-game week lies ahead for the Wheat Kings as they race to the end of the regular season on Feb. 22. On Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., they head to Dauphin’s Credit Union Place to play the Parkland Rangers, and the next night they travel to Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place to meet the Central Plains Capitals at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, they skate into Morden’s Access Event Centre to play the Pembina Valley Hawks at 7:30 p.m., and they finish up back at J&G Homes Arena against the Winnipeg Thrashers on Sunday at 2 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The eighth-place Cougars (20-15-1-2) split a pair of games against the first-place Winnipeg Bruins (31-3-1-1) at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex.

On Sunday, Jordan Knox and Kole Beard gave Southwest a 2-0 lead but Winnipeg tied it in the second period. With the game still 2-2 going into what proved to be a five-round shootout, Jack Polasek and Kole Beard sniped for a 3-2 Cougars win.

Brady Shields made 31 saves for Southwest — plus four of five in the shootout — with Logan German stopping 10 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Kole Beard and Shane Elder scored as Southwest erased 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in the first period, but two unanswered Bruins goals in the second were the difference in a 5-3 Winnipeg win.

Jaxsten Hansen-Young added a goal for the Cougars in the third period.

Nate Brown made 37 saves for Southwest, with Zak Matheson turning aside 14 shots for Winnipeg.

The Cougars next take to the ice on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m., when the Kenora Thistles visit Souris.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The ninth-place Chiefs (16-23-1-0) dropped a pair of games against Pembina Valley at Shoal Lake Communiplex.

On Sunday, the Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Grady McNish scored twice in the second period and Nolan Kozak and Winston Lepp also sniped to narrow the lead to 6-4 after 40 minutes.

While Redden Richmond and Lepp scored in the third period fr the Chiefs, the Hawks added three more in a wild 9-6 win.

Sawyer Wallin made 49 saves for Yellowhead, with Brody Peters blocking 32 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Saturday, Carter White scored twice and Nolan Kozak and Redden Richmond added singles but the Chefs fell 6-4 to the Hawks. Landon McGregor made 51 saves for Yellowhead, with Koen Bleznuk turning aside 33 shots for Pembina Valley.

Eight 10-minute misconducts were levied in the final minute.

On the weekend, the Chiefs host the Winnipeg Bruins at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 12:45 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The sixth-place Rangers (20-12-4-1) swept the 11th-place Interlake Lightning (10-26-1-0) at Teulon-Rockwood Arena.

On Sunday, Noah Smigelsky, Owen Sigvaldason, Joshua Weir and Noah Hanneson sniped in a 4-1 Parkland victory.

Eddy Person made 25 saves for Parkland, with Seth Schaeffer stopping 23 shots for Interlake.

On Saturday, the Rangers were trailing 2-1 after 40 minutes, but earned a 5-2 decision on third-period goals by Gavyn Yon, Dayson Martin, Dylan Anderson and Jordan Height. Ryzlie Nepinak also scored.

Parkland’s Carter Sigurdson and Interlake’s Grayson Mcdonald both made 37 saves.

After hosting Brandon on Tuesday, the Rangers have a busy week ahead, visiting the Winnipeg Bruins at Southdale Community Centre on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Eastman Selects at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The fifth-place Chiefs (10-10-2-2) enjoyed a week off in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

The Chiefs return to the ice on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., when they visit Morden’s Access Event Centre to play the Pembina Valley Hawks.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The third-place Wildcats (13-7-0-4) also had the week off.

They visit Winnipeg’s Hockey for all Centre to meet the Ice on Saturday at 2:05 p.m., and then head to Morden to play Pembina Valley on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
