Les Lazaruk, a former CKLQ staffer who has called games for the Western Hockey League’s Saskatoon Blades since the start of the 1994-95 season, will receive the Bob Ridley Golden Microphone Honourarium.

The award, presented annually by the non-profit Western Canada Professional Hockey Scouts Foundation, recognizes a member of the print or broadcasting profession for their service at the major junior level. It includes an honourarium to be donated to an individual or charity of their choosing.

The award is named in honour of Ridley, who called more than 4,000 Medicine Hat Tigers games and also sometimes drove the team bus before retiring in August 2022.

Lazaruk, who has called more than 2,300 regular-season and playoff games, started at CKLQ in 1980, leaving to go to CJOB in Winnipeg in 1983, where he helped cover the Winnipeg Jets.

He has been the Saskatoon Media Group’s sports director since September 1994. He is the second recipient of the award, after Dean (Scooter) Vrooman, the retired radio voice of the Portland Winterhawks.

The award will presented at the foundation’s third annual Wall of Honour induction dinner on Aug. 28 in Okotoks, Alta. A former Brandon Wheat Kings scout, the late Mark Johnston, will also be inducted into the foundation’s Wall of Honour.

More information on the WCPHS Foundation can be found at its website, hockeyscoutsfoundation.com.
