BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The second-place Wheat Kings (32-6-0-3) had a four-game week, meeting the Parkland Rangers, the 10th-place Central Plains Capitals (12-25-1-2), the eighth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (22-15-1-1) and the fourth-place Winnipeg Thrashers (30-9-2-0) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.
On Sunday at J&G Homes Arena, Urijah Moosetail made 31 saves to earn his second consecutive shutout — and fifth of the season — while Easten Turko and Hudson Champagne gave Brandon a 2-0 lead in the second period and Ethan Stanley added a late empty netter as the Wheat Kings blanked the Thrashers 3-0.
Tate Barnaby blocked 33 shots for Winnipeg.
Both clubs were short staffed: Winnipeg dressed just 13 skaters and Brandon had 15.
On Saturday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Moosetail stopped all 27 shots he faced and Reid Nicol, Max Dawson, Kale Jones, Hunter Ethelston and Kevin Knee scored in the second period in a 5-0 Wheat Kings victory over the Hawks.
Koen Bleznuk made 48 saves for Pembina Valley.
On Wednesday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Champagne and Jaxson Brick both scored twice and Cole Dupuis, Crew Elder and Ethelston added singles in a 7-1 victory.
Cooper Dryden, who was 94 seconds from a shutout, made 16 saves and Moosetail added one for Brandon, with Karsen Dyck blocking 38 shots for Central Plains.
On Tuesday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, Dayson Martin and Noah Smigelsky scored in the shootout as the Rangers earned a 5-4 victory.
Landyn Garton, Alex Campbell, Smigelsky and Brayden Budolowski scored for Parkland, with Jaxson Brick, Ethan Stanley, Easten Turko and Hudson Champagne replying for Brandon. Champagne’s goal came with 59 seconds left to force overtime.
Dryden made 16 saves for Brandon, with Carter Sigurdson blocking 55 shots for Parkland.
The Wheat Kings hit the road this week to meet the Eastman Selects at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., and skate against the Pembina Valley Hawks at Morden’s Access Event Centre on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
The Cougars (22-15-1-2), who are tied for sixth with Parkland, swept the 13th-place Kenora Thistles (2-35-0-1) at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex.
On Sunday, Kole Beard had a hat trick, Jack Polasek scored twice and Eric Berger and Spencer Cullen added singles in a 7-1 Cougars victory. Brady Shields made 17 saves for Southwest, with Tyson Ponton blocking 27 shots for Kenora.
On Saturday, Nate Brown stopped all 13 shots he faced, Riley Fluker scored twice and Polasek, Cullen, Shane Elder and Jamie Williamson added singles in a 6-0 Southwest win. Keanu Waasa’aanakwad made 27 saves for Kenora.
The Cougars host the Rangers on Wednesday at 8 p.m., then visit Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex to play the Interlake Lightning on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre to skate against the Wild on Sunday at 3 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The ninth-place Chiefs (16-25-1-0) were swept by the first-place Winnipeg Bruins (35-3-1-1) at the Shoal Lake Communiplex.
On Sunday, the Bruins built an 8-0 lead before Carter White scored early in the third period in an 8-1 Yellowhead loss.
Landon McGregor made 60 saves for Yellowhead, with Zak Matheson turning aside 24 shots for Winnipeg.
On Saturday, Wyatt Njegovan opened the scoring for the Chiefs but the Bruins replied with the next three goals en route to a 9-3 victory. Nolan Kozak and Winston Lepp also sniped for the Chiefs.
Sawyer Wallin made 47 saves for Yellowhead, with Logan German stopping 18 shots for Winnipeg.
The Chiefs visit Parkland at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and then host the Kenora Thistles on Sunday at 1 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
After besting the Wheat Kings on Tuesday, the Rangers (21-15-4-1) visited the Bruins on Friday, the Winnipeg Thrashers on Saturday and the fifth-place Eastman Selects (26-11-1-2) on Sunday.
On Sunday at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre, Alex Campbell and Brayden Budolowski scored for the Rangers but the Selects sniped three times in the third period for a 4-2 Eastman victory.
Eddy Person made 53 saves for Parkland, with Zaiden McDonald Horvath blocking 36 shots for Eastman.
On Saturday at Seven Oaks Community Centre, the Thrashers took a 3-0 lead before Alex Campbell and Dayson Martin replied for the Rangers but the Winnipeggers emerged with a 4-2 win.
Parkland’s Carter Sigurdson and Winnipeg’s Tate Barnaby both made 33 saves.
On Friday at Southdale Community Centre, Noah Smigelsky had the lone Parkland goal as they fell 5-1 to the Bruins.
Sigurdson made 38 saves for the Rangers, with Zak Matheson blocking 18 shots for Bruins.
The Rangers host Yellowhead on Friday and Kenora on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
GIRLS
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The fifth-place Chiefs (10-10-3-2) earned a point in a loss to the Pembina Valley Hawks (8-15-0-1), who are tied for sixth place in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.
On Saturday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Casey O’Brien scored 22 seconds into overtime for a 2-1 Hawks victory. Callee Despiegelaere scored the Yellowhead goal.
Yellowhead’s Kylie Hack and Pembina Valley’s Hannah Bannister both made 25 saves.
This week, the Chiefs are at Shoal Lake Communiplex, with the Pembina Valley Hawks visiting on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Interlake Lightning on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The third-place Wildcats (14-7-0-5) earned three points against the first-place Winnipeg Ice (23-1-0-1) and Pembina Valley.
On Sunday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Ivy Perkin had two goals, Payton Smith sniped once and Rachel Lyver had the winner with 5:09 left as the Wildcats earned a 4-3 victory.
Indigo Stone made 14 saves for Westman, with Madison Froese turning aside 41 shots for Pembina Valley.
On Saturday at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre, Kate Cairns and Chloe Nicolas scored in the three-round shootout as the Ice earned a 4-3 victory.
Lucy Waldner, Ivy Perkin and Kasia Baranyk scored for Westman, which held 2-0 and 3-1 leads. Winnipeg scored twice in the final five minutes to send the game to overtime.
Shannon Hees made 42 saves for Westman, with Isla Matthews turning aside 30 shots for Winnipeg.
The Wildcats are at Hartney Arena this week with the reverse schedule of Yellowhead, hosting Interlake on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Pembina Valley on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
