Vincent Massey’s Kaitlyn Couckuyt is one of four student athletes who have been selected for a Dr. Dale Iwanoczko memorial volleyball scholarship for $1,000 this year.

Couckuyt, a setter and team captain for three seasons, was a big part of the team’s historic run of two consecutive 4A provincial volleyball championships

At the same time, she played national level racquetball, maintained a 95 per cent average in the classroom and will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in physics.

Gabriel Beaudin of Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School also earned a scholarship.

The left-side hitter has been named his varsity team’s MVP for four consecutive years, was a national gold medallist with the 16U North American Indigenous Games team, Volleyball Manitoba’s 16U player of the year and a provincial graduating all-star.

With an 88 per cent average, he’s set to continue his volleyball career at Brandon University, along with Couckuyt.

The other winners were Céleste Pelletier of Winnipeg’s Collège Jeanne-Sauvé and Elliot Smith of Winnipeg’s Miles Macdonell Collegiate.

Iwanoczko played for Lord Selkirk Regional and the University of Manitoba Bisons, where he was named a five-time All-Canadian. After beginning this medical career, he died at age 30 from Hodgkin’s disease.
