The second stage of the Manitoba Winter Games swung into action on Thursday, with eight sports taking centre stage in Thompson.

• BADMINTON — In U15 boys doubles, Kush Mathai and Xander Murray of Brandon went 0-3.

In U17 female doubles, West-2 (Neepawa’s Anne Crosson and Sophie Lynne Saquet) went 0-2, falling in the semifinals to East. West-1 (Jordyn Jade Eggie of Swan River and Mila Pehura of Portage la Prairie) went 2-1 and lost in the final to Winnipeg Blue.

In U17 boys doubles, Sawyer Blixhavn of Killarney and Noah Ferguson of St. Norbert went 2-1, fell in the semis to Winnipeg Blue and won bronze over East in the third-place game.

In U17 mixed doubles, Thium Kadigamuwa of Melita and Sydney Wolfe of Neepawa went 2-1 in the round-robin, beat North in the semis and then lost to Winnipeg Blue in the final.

In the U17 team mix competition, West lost its first match but plays twice more today.

• CROSS COUNTRY SKIING — In the U14 girls classic race, Joanna Barkman of Boissevain was third in 27:03.6 seconds and Maeve Goertzen of Boissevain was fifth in 31:17.7 seconds.

In the U14 boys classic race, Eric White of Lorette was 10th in 26:35.1 seconds.

In the U12 girls classic race, Nellie Guenther earned silver in 17:01.0 seconds, and Abigail Barkman was fourth in 18:43.7 seconds.

In the U16 boys classic race, Caleb Barkman of Boissevain was fifth in 33:40.2 seconds.

There were no Westman entries in the U16 girls or the U12 boys events.

• CURLING — In the mixed doubles U18 event at the Burntwood Curling Club, West-1 — the Swan River duo of Ryder Kushniryk and Lexie Leadbeater — fell 6-5 to South-2 in the morning in Pool A, 13-1 to Winnipeg Gold-2 in the afternoon, and finished up in the evening against Winnipeg Gold-1 in a game that ended after deadline.

In Pool B, West-2 (the Carberry duo of Taeven McCutchin and Abbey Snowden) beat Winnipeg Blue-2 8-5 and South-1 5-4 and then faced Winnipeg Blue-1 in a game that ended after deadline.

• FIGURE SKATING — In the singles star 5 mix, Justice Tremblay of Russell (22.26) and Haleigh Cuvelier of Brandon (20.93) lead after the free program.

In the singles star 6/7 mix, Mia du Plessis of Virden is third (19.25), Luke Greenbank of Moosomin is fourth (18.29), and Evie McAdam of Virden is seventh (16.28).

In the singles pre-novice mix, Kaylee Malcolm of Elkhorn and Ainslee McGregor of Waskada were competing after deadline.

All three events continue today.

• FUTSAL — In U14 female action at the Bill Comaskey Gymnasium, West fell 10-2 to Winnipeg Blue and then met North after deadline. The round-robin continues today in the five-team field, with the top two clubs meeting in the gold-medal game on Saturday morning.

In the U14 male division, West fell 6-3 to South and then tied Winnipeg Blue 6-6. That put them into the fifth-place game, which takes place today against North.

• HOCKEY — In under-14 female competition, West-1 fell 5-0 to Winnipeg Blue in their morning game in Pool A. In the afternoon against Winnipeg Gold, Rylee Wilson of Neepawa had the lone goal as Westman lost 4-1.

In Pool B, West-2 also suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of South-2. Their second game, against North, finished after deadline.

The quarterfinals and semifinals take place today, with the bronze- and gold-medal games on Saturday.

• SPEED SKATING — In the 400-metre U14 female race at C.A. Nesbitt Arena, Zoe Forbes of Brandon posted times of 44.084 and 44.682 to earn bronze. Sophia Forbes of Brandon posted runs of 48.103 and 45.558 seconds.

In the 400-metre U14 male race, Alexander Fouillard of Shilo (55.297 seconds), Titus Pinette of Brandon (1:03.614) and Hayden Pulleyblank of Brandon (46.060) all posted times in the heats, with Pulleyblank finishing in 49.175 seconds in the semifinals and 46.233 in the final but outside the medals.

Meanwhile, in the semifinals, Fouillard (57.832) and Pinette (1:05.219) also raced.

In the 1,000-m U18 female division, Madelyn Nairn completed the course in 2:06.700, and took bronze with a time of 2:03.036 in the final.

In the 1,000-m U18 male division, Alex Yaschyshyn of Winnipeg competed for West and finished outside the top three.

In the 2,000-m U14 mixed relay, West finished fourth.

• WRESTLING — In the U16 team competition, West’s Daxton Brock of Minnedosa, Rose Hoa Hong Langill of Winkler and Marshall McKay and Danylo Litvinov of Brandon topped Winnipeg Blue, Winnipeg Gold and South to go unbeaten.

Action in all the 11 individual divisions will be held today.
