• 40 YEARS AGO — John Carson of the Brandon University Bobcats was selected as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union’s men’s basketball player of the year.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Russell George netted the game-winning goal at 10:44 of the second period to lead the Neepawa Natives to a 3-2 victory over the Portage Terriers in Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoff action.

• 20 YEARS AGO — The Foxwarren Falcons cruised into the NorthCentral Hockey League final with a 10-3 win over the McCreary Mustangs on Saturday. Craig Geekie, Gord Nickel, Pat Falloon and Calvin Mentuck each scored twice as the Falcons completed a three-game sweep of their best-of-five semifinal. Steven Chipelski and Brett Hunter also scored for Foxwarren.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Mitch Hansen scored with 6:36 left in regulation and the Virden Oil Capitals erased a two-goal third period deficit to beat the Winnipeg Blues 4-3 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven Manitoba Junior Hockey League quarter-final playoff series in Virden. Brandon native Zach Whitecloud had a goal and two assists in the Oil Capitals’ comeback win, while Boissevain’s Carter Cowlthorp and Bennett Dalke also scored.
