IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Leo Clermont and his rink of Gladys Simpson, Herb Ross and Bob Patterson, captured the civic employees curling league by defeating Frank Woodmass and his rink of Bill Lakevold, Walter Byczkowski and Irene Patterson.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Lyle Franklin’s goal with less than five minutes to play in the third period snapped a 7-7 tie and gave the Deloraine Royals a 2-0 lead in the best-of- five SouthWest Hockey League final with an 8-7 win over the Minnedosa Bombers. Don Morrison had two goals.
• 40 YEARS AGO — The Cartwright Clippers survived a late rally by Spectrum Sportsmen to earn a 7-6 victory and a one- game lead in the SouthWest Hockey League final. Brent Vincent and Rob Maxwell both scored twice for Cartwright.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Cruising to a 10-0 first-period lead, the Russell Rams went on to defeat the Blanchard Bobcats 15-1 and clinch the North Central Hockey League playoff championship. Jason Mushamanski scored three goals to lead Russell, which had two goals from each from Ted Fleury, Bryan Glasman, Terry Huston and Derrick Chuchmuch. Devin Zimmer, Peter Boake, Darrin Zimmer and Andrew Fenton added singles.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The faces on the ice change dramatically from year to year in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League and next season there will be a lot of new faces behind the bench as well in Westman. Both the Southwest Cougars and Yellowhead Chiefs are looking for new coaches after bench bosses Troy Leslie and Jeff MacDonald stepped down from their posts recently.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings took a two-game lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series as they beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-2 at Westman Place. The Wheat Kings received goals from Tim McGauley, Duncan Campbell, Ivan Provorov, Tanner Kaspick and James Shearer as they outshot the Warriors 50-27.
