• 50 YEARS AGO — Centre Ron Chipperfield of the Calgary Cowboys of the World Hockey Association today was named the first winner of the Scotty Munro Memorial trophy as the top WCHL graduate in the WHA.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Kevin Grindey of Brandon was second in two events and third in four others at the Manitoba Marlin swim meet held at the Pan Am pool in Winnipeg. Grindey, a member of the Brandon Bluefins, finished second in the 100-metre backstroke and the 50-metre freestyle in the 13-14-year age group.
• 30 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings, carried by the 30-save performance of goaltender Jody Lehman and timely goals from Kelly Smart and Dorian Anneck, rolled to their 22nd straight victory — a 2-1 decision over the Prince Albert Raiders.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Brandonite Gary Poole helped Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton earn some money leading up to this week’s World Curling Tour Player’s Championship in Calgary. Stoughton, who has been using a patchwork lineup since second Garry Van Den Berghe retired after the Brier, called on Poole last week for the Bear Mountain Curling Classic in Victoria and the team made it to the semifinal before losing to Pat Simmons of Moose Jaw, Sask.
• 10 YEARS AGO — It didn’t take long for Neepawa to find its new bench boss. Less than a month after the Manitoba Junior Hockey League team announced it was not renewing the contact of head coach Jim Fuyarchuk, Dustin Howden was introduced as his replacement.
