40 YEARS AGOKevin Grindey of Brandon was second in two events and third in four others at the Manitoba Marlin swim meet held at the Pan Am pool in Winnipeg. Grindey, a member of the Brandon Bluefins, finished second in the 100- metre backstroke and the 50-metre freestyle in the 13-to-14-year-old age group.

30 YEARS AGO — Neepawa held on for a 5-3 victory over the St. James Canadians to become the first team to win on home ice in the best-of-seven Manitoba Junior Hockey League final. Ryan Ogilvie scored twice for Neepawa while Darren Kirk and Russell George had singles.

10 YEARS AGO — Brandonite Devon LeBlanc of Brandon scored one goal and Lee Goren had a goal and two assists to help the North Stars build a 3-2 lead after two periods, but the Île des Chênes North Stars failed to earn a bye to the Allan Cup semifinals in Steinbach. The Bentley Generals scored twice in the third period, with the winner coming with 1:55 left in the game. Brandonites Zeanan Ziemer and Travis Mealy, Deloraine’s Ryan Adams, Souris’s Chris Falloon, Killarney’s Reid Gow and former Wheat King Chad Erb also play on the team.
