The Dauphin Kings have mutually parted ways with long-time head coach and general manager Doug Hedley.

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League squad announced Hedley’s departure on Wednesday, stating they are “looking to move in a different direction.” The Kings have already begun searching for his successor.

Hedley, who has 37 years of experience behind the bench and 20 in the MJHL, led his club to a second-place finish in the West Division this season thanks to a 33-23-2 record before being upset by the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in four straight in the playoffs.

Hedley captured one Turnbull Cup with Dauphin four years ago after it edged the Steinbach Pistons 2-1 in Game 7 and came close to a second last season when the Kings fell to the Northern Manitoba Blizzard in triple overtime in Game 7.

He’s had three stints in Dauphin with the first being when he started his coaching career in 1989, which lasted for three seasons before he spent a decade in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with the Estavan Bruins, Lebret Eagles, and Nipawin Hawks.

Hedley returned to the Kings for four seasons beginning in 2003, and then came back in 2018 for the longest of his three tenures. He coached the Quesnel Millionaires of the BCHL, Parkland Rangers of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League, and Blizzard in between that time.
