• 60 YEARS AGO — The Red Caps won the league championship with a total of 4,338 pins for four games. Members of the winning team were: Shirley Seddon, Jean Bednar, Denyse Melnick, Elaine Dechka, Fran Milne and Ivy Beer.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Terry Marshall, the basher from Virden who spent his junior days with the Wheat Kings and is now playing for Johnstown Jets of the North American Hockey League, was hired to appear in Universal Studio’s hockey cult classic Slap Shot with actor Paul Newman.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Twelve-year-old Brandonite Lisa Sharp of the Brandon Eagles Gymnastics Club, qualified at the University of Manitoba along with five Winnipeg girls for the national gymnastics championships in Quebec. Sharp is the first national calibre gymnast produced by the Brandon club.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The sky just got a whole lot higher for Jenna Kerbis. Already a fast-rising gymnast in the Canadian ranks, the 18-year-old Brandonite is preparing for next month’s national championships with an extra jump in her step after her bronze-medal performance at the Commonwealth Games last month in Melbourne, Australia.
