• 60 YEARS AGO — Earl Oxford won the Brandon Grade 7 basketball championship. Winning team members were: Stan Cwiertnia, Marty Old, Ron Eamer, Gordon Lowry, Victor Holm, Bryan Kaspick, Brian Gerring, Bill McCallum and Dale Honke, with coach Bryce Tannahill.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Brian Kilborn received a Manitoba Broomball Association trophy as top scorer in the playoffs. The Pizza Place player picked up 14 points. Goalie Brian Clark was the best netminder in the playoffs with a 0.83 goals-against average.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Sails and the German Royals played to a 1-1 draw in a Brandon Senior Soccer League game. Jim Harvey scored for Sails. Huber Amedick replied for the Royals.
• 30 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings bombed the Spokane Chiefs 9-5 to take a 2-1 series lead in the league final. Scoring for the Wheaties were Bobby Brown and Wade Redden with two each, Dorian Anneck, Peter Schaefer, Mike Leclerc, Stefan Cherneski and Ryan Robson with singles.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Michael Burgess ran out of momentum at the junior national racquetball championships. After winning the 18-and-under doubles title with fellow Brandonite Scott Campbell, the top-ranked Burgess was derailed by defending champion Ryan Smith 15-5, 15-4 in the boys’ singles final.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Nolan Patrick has led the Brandon Wheat Kings back to the Western Hockey League final. The 17-year-old winger from Winnipeg scored his second career hat trick and added two assists as the Wheat Kings beat the Red Deer Rebels 5-2 at Westman Place and won the Eastern Conference crown for the second year in a row. The Wheat Kings beat the Rebels, who will host the Memorial Cup next month, 4-1 in the best-of-seven conference final.
