• 50 YEARS AGO — Lawrie Lewis, a former star with the Brandon Optimist Sundowner Track Club, has cleared a major hurdle towards a coveted berth in the Olympic Games. Lewis, who went on to run out of Indiana University, was clocked at 9:06.3 in his specialty, the 3,000-metre steeplechase, which qualified him for the pre-Olympic meet in Quebec City.

• 40 YEARS AGO — A goal by Sean Kennedy capped a second-half comeback and gave Vincent Massey Vikings a 3-2 win over the Crocus Plainsmen in Brandon high school varsity boys’ soccer action. Chris Ferguson and Jeff McMaster also scored for the Vikings.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Virden’s Club West Rage fell 2-0 to Winnipeg’s Bisons in the winal of the 18U Volleyball Canada club national championship. Becky Young and Kristi Hunter were named to the all-star team.
