• 40 YEARS AGO — Brandon Boxing Club member Darvin Lavalle won a split decision over Richard Bangloy of Winnipeg in a 137-pound Golden Gloves bout in Portage la Prairie. Lavalle’s teammate Darcy Smith also claimed victory in a 156-pound bout when Dean McKee was disqualified.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Lisa Nagorski scored two second-half goals to lead the Thunder to a 3-1 triumph over the Blazers in a Brandon Senior Soccer League women’s game at Crocus Plains. The Thunder’s Trisha Ward and the Blazers’ Davilyn Coombs traded goals in the first half.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Former Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Bryan McCabe signed a five-year deal with he Toronto Maple Leafs.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Jenai Buchanan of the Pilot Mound Pilots was named the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association’s rural athlete of the week. The five-foot-seven catcher helped the Pilots go undefeated in Zone 6 fastpitch league and tournament play. It was Pilot Mound’s first zone title in a decade. Buchanan caught every inning during the zone championship and was 4-for-6 with two doubles and a home run, while batting .666.
