N LOCAL HISTORY

• 40 YEARS AGO — Michelle Andresen scored the only goal as the Vincent Massey Vikings blanked the Crocus Plainsmen 1-0 to capture the Brandon High School Girls’ Soccer League title. Lorna Braaksma had the shutout.

• 30 YEARS AGO — David Kirkup and Trevor Kozak did it all for the Souris Cardinals in a South West Baseball League doubleheader as the Cardinals swept the Melita Beavers by scores of 10-5 and 7-3. Kirkup gave up eight hits and five runs in seven innings and struck out five on the mound in Game 1 and also went 3-for-5 with a homer, two singles and five RBIs. Kozak earned the save on the mound and had three singles and two RBIs.

• 20 YEARS AGO — A two-goal effort by Trevor Bauche led the Brandon United Cougars boys’ U15 soccer team to a 5-1 victory over the Bonivital Blaze U16 squad Sunday in a Winnipeg premier league contest at Optimist Park. Baslios Negasa, Jesse Roziere and Dane Cruickshank also tallied for the Cougars, who led 3-0 at the half and moved into sole possession of first place in the U15 division.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Cole Waddell struck out seven as he tossed a complete game for the host Hamiota Red Sox in a 7-1 South West Baseball League win over the Hartney Hoppers. Trevor Derlago gave up two runs and struck out three in 4 1/3 innings, but took the loss. Mark Derlago went 3-4 with a run batted in for the Hoppers (4-3), while Justin Knight went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Hamiota (4-5).
