A pair of Westman students have been honoured with Manitoba Building Trades High School athlete of the year awards.

Annika Schmidt of Rivers Collegiate was named the female A winner after competing in volleyball, basketball, badminton and track and field in the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA).

Schmidt, who will attend Brandon University in the fall, served as captain of her volleyball and basketball teams.

She led her basketball team in scoring, and in volleyball, was named a provincial all-star, a graduating all-star and won the Players’ Choice Award at volleyball provincials.

In badminton, Annika and her doubles partner captured the zone girls doubles championship and placed seventh at provincials.

She also competed with the Club West 18U volleyball team, helping earn a national gold medal.

The AA boys winner was Owen Unrau of Carberry Collegiate, who competed in volleyball, basketball and track and field this past school year.

On the basketball court, he was selected to the provincial basketball championship all-star team as his team finished fourth and named AA basketball player of the year. The Cougars won the provincial AA volleyball championship, and he also qualified for provincials in track and field.

Unrau will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall.

The other winners were:

• AA female — Angela Gundrum of Prairie Mountain High School.

• AAA female — Halle Penner of Sanford Collegiate.

• AAAA female — Emilie McLean of Dakota Collegiate.

• A male — Soren Reid of Nellie McClung Collegiate.

• AAA male — Cooper Rodewald of Sanford Collegiate.

• AAAA male — Erik Neufeld of Steinbach Regional Secondary School.

Gundrum was named the overall female athlete of the year, while Reid won the overall male title.
