• 60 YEARS AGO — Souris Cardinals held on to edge Riverside Blues 8-7 in Manitoba Senior Baseball League action. Bill Carpenter led the Cards with a single and double in his first two attempts, then in the seventh inning he socked a long two-run homer.
• 50 YEARS AGO — A rare triple play in the first inning helped Sharpes edge Sokol 17-16 in a Brandon Minor Baseball Association West End B game. Cam Jones outdueled Brent Fines for the pitching decision.
• 40 YEARS AGO— Callum Scott scored the lone goal as Brandon Club United edged the Victoria Inn Titans 1-0 in Brandon Senior Men’s Soccer League action. Mike Corrigan recorded the shutout.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Brandon’s Doug Pickering has captured a national triathlon championship and secured his berth in September’s world championships at the same time. Pickering won the men’s 55-to-59 age group Sunday at the HSBC Triathlon National Championships in Brampton, Ont., racing to a personal best time of 2:12.37.
