The Boissevain Centennials closed out their South West Baseball League semifinal series with a 4-2 victory over the Brandon Cardinals in Game 4 at Andrews Field on Tuesday evening.
The Centennials won the series 3-1 and will advance to the final with a chance to win their fifth consecutive championship.
Boissevain broke open a 1-1 game in the top of the fourth inning when Tanner Clyne singled in a pair of runs with one of his two hits. Drew Hilhorst also had a pair of hits and scored three runs.
Zane Sawyer went the distance for the victory, scattering nine hits, walking one and striking out four.
Adam Hartman was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs, three hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings. Jeff Wiebe pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, surrendering four hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Clark Whelpton had a pair of hits for the Cardinals and Michael Butler had an RBI.
The Centennials now await the winner of the semifinal series between the Oak River Dodgers and Rivers Comets. Oak River won game 3 16-1 on Tuesday to take a 2-1 lead in that series. Game 4 is in Rivers on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Earlier in the day, the league announced its award winners.
The most valuable player for the third year in a row is Rivers pitcher Scott Beever, who threw 35 1/3 innings with 51 strikeouts and a 2.38 ERA. At the plate, he hit .243 with a home run and eight RBI in 48 plate appearances. He won the award by a single vote over Oak River’s Ty Paddock and John Patmore of the Reston Rockets.
The rookie of the year, top pitcher and earned run award winner is Hayden Mackadenski of the Comets, who went 3-0 with a 0.29 ERA, 34 strikeouts and just two walks in 24 innings.
The batting champion was Reston’s Jamie Williamson, who posted a .579 average.
The Mark Minor Award winner, handed out to a player or team official that shows dedication to the team and community and named to honour the former Lyleton Leaf, is Brock Fisher of the Wawanesa Brewers. Brock, who may retire after this season, has played with the Brewers for 22 years.
In recent months, he spearheaded the purchase of a new bus and guided it through various repairs to get it ready for the road, where it is also used by minor ball teams and the Jets in the winter.
