The Westman Magic survived a scare on Thursday but emerged undefeated from the first day at Softball Manitoba’s under-13 AAA provincial championship in Crystal City.
In their first game, the first-place Magic (24-0) scored four runs in the first inning and struck for six in the fourth inning for a mercy-rule 12-5 victory over the the sixth-place Manitoba Angels (8-15-0).
Tenley Figol, Ella Parrott and Surie Small each drove in two runs, with Figol and Kyree Hart each scoring twice. All but one of the Magic’s 11 players crossed the plate.
Emerson Anderson earned the win, allowing one run on three hits through three innings. Hayley Fordyce pitched two innings of relief, giving up three hits and four runs.
In their second game, the Magic took a 6-1 lead after two innings but the seventh-place Smitty’s Terminators (3-20-0) made it a game in a 10-9 Westman victory.
Taylor Lockhart had two hits, three RBI and scored twice to lead the attack, and Jaycee Hackywicz went 3-for-3 and scored three runs.
Anderson allowed four runs in three innings for the win, Fordyce gave up three runs in 1 1/3 innings and Small surrendered two unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings.
The Magic meet the third-place Winnipeg Lightning (12-11-1) at 1 p.m., and the second-place Eastman Wildcats (15-9-0) today. On Saturday, they play fourth-place Central Energy (11-13-0) at 11 a.m., and fifth-place Interlake Phillies (9-14-1) at 3 p.m.
The playoffs are on Sunday, with the top two teams representing Manitoba at the western Canadian championships from Aug. 6 to 9 in Balgonie, Sask.
