• 60 YEARS AGO — Elks defeated Christies 8-4 in Brandon Pony and Colt baseball action. Robbie Crossman collected four hits in four at-bats for the Elks and also was the winning pitcher.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Chris Shearer and Brad Mueller combined to limit Kullberg’s to four hits, but A&W ended up losing the Brandon Minor Baseball Association West End C game 9-3. Robert McConechy stroked a triple and single and Chuck Slack added a triple to help Chris McDonnell to the pitching victory.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Jon Bellas pitched 7 2/3 innings to take a 6-4 win for the Brandon Ora Dental Marlins over the Brandon Cloverleafs in MSBL playoff action. Bellas gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out two. Kevin Thomas was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Marlins while Travis Hiebert went 2-for-2.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Ottawa Senators left-winger Peter Schaefer will be paid $8.4 million US in four-year NHL contract announced. Schaefer, a former junior star with the Brandon Wheat Kings, will get $1.7 million next season and $2.1 million, $2.3 million and $2.3 million in the subsequent years of the new pact, which made a scheduled hearing unnecessary.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings will have a new voice calling their games next season. Bruce Luebke, who did play-by-play for the team for more than two decades on CKLQ, has parted ways with the radio station.
