Kevin Lupetu hoped this day would come, but certainly didn’t anticipate the detours before signing with a U Sports men’s basketball team.
The 24-year-old is joining the Brandon University Bobcats for the 2026-27 Canada West season later than he hoped, but he’s grateful nonetheless.
“I feel super, super excited because I’ve been praying for this for a long time,” Lupetu said. “It’s a good feeling when one of your prayers is being answered. I can’t wait to get on campus, see the guys and the coaching staff and everything.”

The six-foot-two guard said he talked to BU coach Gil Cheung three years ago, while he played for Montmorency in Quebec’s CEGEP Division 2.
But Cheung let him know he needed to clean up his turnovers and improve his shooting. Lupetu spent one year at CEGEP Edouard-Montpetit, then ended up transferring to the University of King’s College in Halifax, joining the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association for the 2024-25 season.
The Longueuil, Que., native only stayed a year, then ended up in the PREP U Circuit back home, where he led the league with 11 assists per game.
“I’m a great, great passer. I love to make my teammates score the ball,” Lupetu said. “I love to make them score because I want them to feel good on the basketball court. If they score, it makes me happy.”
Lupetu has been playing the game since he was five years old, and has a small BU connection as he attended Lucien Pagé and played one year with two-time all-Canadian Bobcat Sultan Bhatti, who just graduated.
He feels his play style has changed a lot and will fit in with the Bobcats much better than it would have a few years ago, as he’s ready to keep up with one of the fastest offences in the country.
There could certainly be more growing pains ahead, especially as a point guard trying to build chemistry with a massive recruit class, which includes Quebec’s Yussef Jawad, Didou Sowadan and Noah Manikoglu, Alberta’s Roman Jensen, Israeli import Orie Zehavi and Neelin Spartans grad Sam Rempel.
But Lupetu is embracing the challenge.
“What I’ve learned the most is you really have to be patient with everybody. Being a point guard, I have to make connections with a lot of people on the floor and the coaching staff,” Lupetu said, adding he has learned from past mistakes.
“I was putting way, way too much pressure on myself to be perfect … but throughout the process, I learned how to have fun.”
