Callie Franklin went 3-for-4 and scored two runs as the Westman Magic under-17 girls opened the western Canadian softball championship with a win on Thursday.
Quinn Twordik pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and three unearned runs in a 10-3 victory over Saskatchewan’s East Central Wolverines in St. Albert, Alta.
Ivy Fry added two hits and two runs for Westman, which was back in action against Alberta’s River City in a game that ended after deadline.
The Magic face the Calgary Adrenaline and Kelowna Heat to round out pool play today.
Meanwhile at U13 westerns, the Magic opened with a 9-2 triumph over the Prince Albert (Sask.) Aces.
Emerson Anderson threw five strikeouts, allowing just three hits in four innings.
Jaycee Hackywicz went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Taylor Larson also reached base twice and scored once.
The Magic dropped their second game 13-1 to the Adrenaline, who recorded two home runs.
Westman managed just five hits, with Ellena Hermenegildo scoring the team’s lone run.
Pickup Peyton Ballantyne, who plays for the Interlake Phillies, took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in one inning.
The Magic play the Saskatoon Raiders and Red Deer Rage today.
