• 50 YEARS AGO — Don Robins and Lefty Hendrickson led UCT to a 3-2, 11-inning victory over Clanwilliam Greys in the opening of a provincial C fastball tournament. Hendrickson cracked four hits, including a home run, and Robins pitched a five-hitter.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Joan Kullberg shot 85 at the Brandon Rec Centre and won a playoff against Alex Town for the Manitoba rural women’s golf title.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Ron Cook hit a solo home run and provided some clutch pitching as the Minnedosa Mavericks secured a berth in the Yellowhead Baseball League’s South Division final. Cook tossed a two-hitter while walking three and striking out 10 over seven innings as the Mavericks blanked the Birtle Blue Jays 2-0.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Both South West Baseball League clubs have advanced to the playoffs of the provincial senior AA baseball championship, while both of the hometown Brandon squads have been relegated to the stands. The Reston Rockets won Pool A with a 3-0 round-robin record and will take on the Wawanesa Brewers today at 10 a.m., at Westbran Stadium. The Brewers finished second in Pool B at 2-1.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette won the starting job at tailback for the Regina Thunder ahead of the Canadian Junior Football League season.
