• 60 YEARS AGO — Brandon Manco Kings advanced to the Manitoba Junior Baseball finals when they trounced Rivers Comets 11-2. Gary Toews pitched a six- hitter as he went the distance to pick up the mound decision. Dave Bender pounded out two singles and a double. Jack Borotsik, Billy Fairbairn and Ray McLaughlin each singled twice.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Jim McDonald Jr. was the picture of consistency in shooting 73-74—147 to take medallist honours in the men’s section of the 43rd annual Tamarack match play tournament in Wasagaming.

• 40 YEARS AGO — William Daniel homered and singled to lead Kenton Cougars to a 13-5 victory over Sioux Valley Renegades in a Virden and District Fastball League playoff game. Blair Fordyce singled twice in support of winning pitcher Wayne Crampain.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Manitoba Senior Baseball League all-star Shane Moffatt was a force on the mound and at the plate as the Brandon Cloverleafs hammered the Neepawa Farmers 17-3 in Game 4 of the best-of-seven championship series. Moffatt gave up six hits and two earned runs in six innings of work and struck out four.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Arsenal needed a shootout but it managed to pull off its second straight upset of the Brandon Senior Men’s Soccer League year-end tournament Sunday at Canada Games Park. Chris Dobson and Ryan Yuen got goals for Arsenal, which trailed 1-0 after the first half. Chad McQueen and Tyler Grime responded for the Fury.

• 10 YEARS AGO — The Joe Beeverz Young Guns dethroned the four-time Andrew Agencies Senior AA Baseball League champion Canadian Tire Cardinals on Sunday, beating them 9-7 to sweep the best-of-five final at Andrews Field.
