WASAGAMING — The only thing holding Riese Gaber and Scott McCallum back from their goal of shooting 59 was their opponents.
That is, their opponents not keeping up.
The Gilbert Plains Country Club duo lit up the Tamarack golf tournament men’s scramble final, defeating P.J. and Jarod Crane 6 and 4 at Clear Lake Golf Course on Saturday.

They raced ahead to a 5-up lead after eight holes without a bogey, then gave one back on the ninth but got back to their ways, pouring in a few more birdies on the back nine to reclaim the trophy they won in 2024.
“Our goal this week was to get a 59 and we were going to get that, no doubt,” Gaber said.
“We came out flying; we knew we needed our A-game against them. It was a fun day and just glad we could get ‘er done.”
The Crane brothers went 15-under par in qualifying, shooting 64 at both Poplar Ridge Golf Course and Clear Lake.
They defeated Mark Odut and Lance Delamare, Jordan Trotter and Jared Jacobson, and then medallists Dave Newman and Scott Kozoroski to reach the final.
Gaber and McCallum also went 15 under, with a 67 at Poplar Ridge and 61 at Clear Lake. They downed Chad Deprez and Lance Prytula in the first round, then knocked off Devon LeBlanc and Adam Sefton, and then Chris Bridges and Derek Cantlon in the semifinals.
For Gaber, a University of North Dakota hockey alumnus who spent last year with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, McCallum is the perfect teammate.
“His misses are the left and right sides of the fairway, so it’s nice having him behind me. We have great chemistry and that’s what makes us a good duo,” Gaber said.
McCallum was more than happy to swing smooth and let Gaber try to tear the cover off the ball. They change the batting order up when they get to the green, where McCallum likes the pressure, but likes it even more when Gaber takes it away entirely by drilling birdies on their first crack.
“Truly this week, we took turns with the putter. There were days my putter was going and today I didn’t have to use the putter very often because Riese had that in the bag. It was fun to watch,” McCallum said.
“Everyone knows in golf, some days it’s yours and some days it’s theirs and today the putts were falling for us.”
While it has been a trying year for the guys from Gilbert Plains, with their golf course being shut down for the season due to flooding in early July, the week was a major highlight.
“I’d just like to thank the Tamarack committee,” McCallum said. “It’s a special week. The families get together and it’s just such a fun week of camaraderie and great sportsmanship, and always fun to be a part of.”
