For Dale Coulter, it was a great tune-up. For teammate Jason Thorpe, it was a terrific follow-up.
The Brandon duo won the Golf Manitoba men’s senior four-ball championship at Killarney Lakeside Golf Club on Wednesday.
Thorpe and Coulter combined to shoot an astonishing 10-under-par 61 in the one-round event, in which teams only count the better of two scores each hole.

“We ham-and-egged it very well. If I had a bad hole, Dale had a great hole and vice versa,” said Thorpe, who won the Tamarack golf tournament men’s championship less than two weeks ago.
“But we didn’t have too many bad holes; we both played really, really well all day.”
It’s Thorpe’s first year eligible for senior events, having turned 55 within the past year. He ramped up his competitive golf schedule, competing in the Golf Manitoba mid-am and senior championships.
He finished tied for 16th at the senior in late July, seven shots back of his teammate.
Coulter finished tied for fourth, earning a spot in the Canadian senior men’s championship taking place at Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg next week.
“He’s hitting the ball well; he’s got a great short game, made a lot of really clutch putts (Wednesday),” Thorpe said. “I think he’s in a good spot (for nationals).”
Thorpe got Wednesday’s round off to a good start with birdie on the third hole and eagle on the par-5 fifth. Coulter added back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes, before making a few bogeys. Thorpe steadied the ship on those holes with a birdie and par.
Coulter added two birdies on the 11th and 12th before Thorpe gave them a one-shot lead coming home with another birdie on the 14th.
Needing a par or better for the win, they sealed it with one more birdie to finish two shots clear of Carl Lechman and David Powell of Elmhurst Golf and Country Club. While some players avoid checking the score, they wanted to know and handled the pressure.
“We knew all day,” Thorpe said of the situation. “We didn’t really look at the leaderboard until later on, but for the last few holes, we knew where we needed to be.
“It got a little tight at the end, but it was a good day.”
Clear Lake’s Ron Cornell and Rick Twaddle shot 64 to finish third.
