IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Hamiota Red Sox won the Western Canada juvenile baseball championship defeating Regina Maroons 13-2 in the final. Mel Smith homered in the bottom of the first inning to give Hamiota the lead. Lewis Morrison handled the pitching chores for the Red Sox.
• 50 YEARS AGO — The Ed Sands team of Brandon won the annual Manitoba Lawn Bowling Association tournament for the second year in a row. Sands bowled with Herb Moffat, Mildred Moffat and Helen Sands.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Brandon Barbarians got tries from Darcy Parrot, Rob Smith and Kevin Chambers en route to an 15-0 victory over Shilo in a Manitoba Rugby Union Division III game.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Mike Reimer scored four goals to lead the Portage Terriers past the Neepawa Natives 9-4 in an MJHL exhibition game. Rock Marion, with two goals, Ryan McCormick, Keith Carson and Tyler Carefoot also scored for the Terriers, who led 3-2 and 6-4 at the intermissions.
• 20 YEARS AGO — It will be much earlier in the season, but the Manitoba Bisons and Regina Cougars will renew their rivalries in Souris during an exhibition university hockey game that has become somewhat of a tradition. The town has hosted a game each of the past three seasons — usually in February — and will do it again on Sept. 15 when the two Canada West teams clash at Murray Arena.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Trent Cassan is joining the Calgary Hitmen as an assistant coach. The 33-year-old Medora product heads to the Western Hockey League club after spending parts of the last seven seasons as the head coach of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Yorkton Terriers.
